I'm so very sad to hear of the death of Esther Ranzen who played an important role in reuniting me with Nicky Winton - the man who saved my life. It's so desperately sad that she couldn't choose assisted dying as was her wish.

It is a shame Classic Who ended when it did because the BBC had finally figured out how to do convincing monsters (and on less than half the budget of (pre-Disney) NuWho).

I think Private Eye doesn’t understand how LLMs watermark their output.
Section reads: Meanwhile Anthropic, the company behind the popular LLM Claude, has committed to "include machine-readable marks in content that Claude generates" effectively watermarking the model's
output. The only problem is that they can be removed simply by making a screengrab of the text and, er, using another Al to transcribe it.

Once you understand the corporate culture of AI hyperscalers is everyone cooking their brains by locking themselves in the bathroom, holding flashlights under their chins, and saying "Aaaaaaaaaay Eyeeeeeee" until they wet themselves in terror, things snap into focus: pluralistic.net/2023/06/04/a...
A cutaway view of a stone tower containing an elaborate water-powered medieval geared machine. Rising out of the machine is a rainbow-tinted, pixelated God with the robes, beard and all. To one side of this scene is a cluster of tiny people in Jesus-era robes, falling about themselves in religious ecstasy all over a stone staircase, atop of which stands a robed priest with his hands upraised. The background is a set of shining golden rays, emanating from pixel-God.

This is just hype, hokum and bullshit. It suits the interests of these companies to make it seem like we’re on the brink of Skynet. But really they’re trying to talk the market into sustaining a boom that is increasingly precipitous.

TIL that Mohamed Atta was a professional urban planner, of the preservationist nimby persuasion, and that his graduate school thesis was about how high-rises ruin neighborhood character 😳.
Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta that reads, “ At the Hamburg University of Technology, Atta studied under the guidance of the department chair, Dittmar Machule, who specialized in the Middle East. 19] Atta was averse to modern development. This included the construction of high-rise buildings in Cairo and other ancient cities in the region. He believed that the drab and impersonal apartment blocks, built in the 60s and 70s, ruined the beauty of old neighborhoods and robbed their people of privacy and dignity.”Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta, with a highlighted sentence that reads “He criticized how the newfangled skyscrapers and other modernizing projects disrupted the fabric of communities.”

A reminder that this is the quality of our MPs now. Bance suggested that a system that required a six month terminal diagnosis and sign off from two doctor and a judge (later amended) could somehow be used to murder women which is frankly a sickening argument.

Maybe but this doesn’t explain Marie Tidball, who was anti welfare cuts but pro the bill. Marie is like the classic, clear-eyed soft left Labour MP. I think assisted dying bill had little to do with it. The poor handling of welfare cuts is a much clearer example of how Starmer lost the PLP.

MPs produced a bad bill to deal with fictitious, possibly even bad faith, objections and even that failed. Our political class is comprised of intellectual and moral cowards and it’s no wonder they are rolling over in the face of actual Nazis on the streets.

The placard here is either monstrous or stupid: the idea that you would force someone with motor neuron disease (a disease for which there is no treatment), who has clearly avowed the desire to die before they are completely paralysed, is not care it is torture.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

This is the problem with Govt’s devolution agenda. Without elected assembly there is a significant democratic deficit and we’ll have more Houchens. At the least the Prescott RAs were going to have 30-odd assembly members to hold exec to account. This really is political science 101.

Attempting to make him into a martyr who did nothing wrong is weird and oddly patronizing. The brutal excessiveness and glee of the press coverage was wrong *even though he was a serial fabulist and plagiarist*, as comparison against other serial fabulists and plagiarist like Boris Johnson shows.

On Roman Road just now there was a crash, so the police blocked the road while the mangled vehicle was towed away. People were furious and started trying to drive THROUGH the police cordon. Something that feels different post-2020 is a general sense that the law isn’t The Law anymore.

Plaque at Manchester Museum:

EXPLORING VARIATION
The Museum has several collections of snails put together by scientists who studied inheritance and evolution. Arthur Stelfox (1883-1972) was interested in the ways that different shell patterns and colours are inherited. He bred snails of different varieties with one another over a period of sixty years. Collections like this are still used by scientists, who are trying to answer new questions.
