Not sure, maybe ways of rewarding academics for introducing new human talent (that they’ve no direct or traded institutional conmection to). Otherwise things retreat back to familiar faces, “old boy networks” etc.

Just assume good faith and move on. There are also dual citizenships unrelated to NI, for example.

Which is entirely consistent with what @bparsia.bsky.social was saying wrt UK & the “British” terminology. Meanwhile fwiw en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_GB apparently survives as a label by virtue of “UK” not covering Isle of Man, the Channel Islands & UK Overseas Territories dg Falklands, Gibraltar

I was surprised that “British” is the official citizenship term. But I guess it lines up with news reporting etc where you hear of “British interests” still

Dan Brickley @danbri.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Yeah. Maybe for a fish & chips shop in Gibraltar? www.gov.uk/government/p... is quite lucid about the quirks,
10.2.3 British
This is the adjectival form of Britain, but the word is also frequently employed as the adjectival form of United Kingdom; thus “British government” is used at least as frequently as “United Kingdom government”, and “British citizen” is actually the correct official term for a citizen of the United Kingdom. As an adjective, therefore, the term British is frequently inclusive of Northern Ireland; it is only the one specific nominal term “Great Britain”, which invariably excludes Northern Ireland

Yeah I think in policy, legal, paperwork, govt documents etc it has won. Less so in how people speak.

Dan Brickley @danbri.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
GB was always lurking there confusingly in background as I was growing up. Grammatically “UK-ish” doesn’t work like “English, Welsh, British.” And “British” feels odd; if the country isn’t GB (and it isn’t!) why hasn’t “UK citizen” been pushed harder? Not defending the mess, just fishing around.

So many of the norms underlying academic culture relied on frictions associated with writing. It was entirely predictable that academia would be profoundly harmed when a machine came along to remove those frictions by making (insincere, inaccurate) communication effortless.

AI agents are checking the scientific literature — and spotting decades-old errors www.nature.com/articles/d4158… #AI #FactChecking
Sebastian Pios, a theoretical chemist at Zhejiang Lab in Hangzhou, China, was using an Al system to predict the boiling points of' several molecules when it began producing values that clashed with long-accepted entries in a 75-year-old reference database. At first, he thought the model was wrong. But when he manually checked the original literature, he found that the reference data were wrong, not the Al model.
In two other cases, Pios's Al model spotted errors in older papers and reference books - mistakes that have made their way into the scientific canon. One was a typo in a paper; another was incorrect values of century-old boiling-point measurements. Both errors are likely to have caused researchers using the database "a lot of trouble"
", says Pios.
Pios is one of a growing number of scientists using Al as a tool for auditing scientific knowledge. As well as checking databases, researchers are using specialized Al tools to hunt for errors in papers published in journals and conf

Rescuing Solid is a poor goal. I continue to believe in the broad mission it articulates including pragmatic use of RDF (which can be nuanced and contextualized). The fundamental issue with Solid is not RDF but the idea that full realtime read-write of shared data files is important and achievable.

“Digitizing” eg via gaussian splats seems a potential middle ground, where you might mine the ever changing dreamspace for material and then assemble it into a more repeatable experience. Maybe better for backgrounds etc where physics and animation expectations might be lower?
