What I really love during election year and at every other time is think pieces by dudes framing pay equity as a choice/cost versus a basic inherent policy that any democracy should have as a given right - which also wouldn’t be framed as such if men were the ones primarily impacted by its absence.

Any media outlets reporting on NZ First's fireworks ban policy without mentioning the fact they withdrew their previous fireworks ban members bill is treating the NZ public with contempt. The state of political reporting in this country is pathetic.

And if you think I'm joking, this is the level of journalism we experienced when John Key was PM. Now and then a columnist would wonder how "Teflon John" was so untouchable, and it's like, yeah, I wonder why the public view him like a slightly embarrassing celebrity.
Various stories like what does John Key think about being the 48th hottest leader, the 50 Shades of Grey film, planking and derping, his lettuce up for sale, rugby, etc etv

Back when he was PM, the NZ Herald would often use John Key as a kind of freelance vox pop, getting his "reckons" about everything. So to hand over their election debate to him to complain about left-ish policies is hilarious and right on brand for them. They've probably offered him a podcast.
NZ Herald:
Opinion Thomas Coughlan

Relaxed, ruthless and not on the ballot: John Key won a debate he wasn't even contesting

For a few moments, the Herald’s Future of New Zealand debate, hosted by Ryan Bridge on Wednesday night, felt like an unlikely showdown between former Prime Minister Sir John Key and Green MP Tamatha Paul.

The debate followed an unconventional format, beginning with Bridge interviewing a rolling panel of experts, including Key, about their hopes and fears for the future, and then debating the views of those panellists with political candidates in the second half.

Key’s panel went first.

He was relaxed, but nonetheless demonstrated an acuity in debating each issue, and making sure he said what he wanted the debate to say – even if he wasn’t actually answering the question he’d been asked.

3 years on, how do we feel about The Post's Associate Editor assertion that Act's attacks on Māori were "one person's commonsense"? 'Cause from where I'm standing it looks like Hipkins was right to be concerned and actually Luke Malpass played a role in where we are today.
Luke Malpass, Sep 2023: ACT's Seymour said yesterday that Labour's "constant obsession with categorising citizens by their ethnic background," is a dead end for the country.

Speaking at Koroneihana, Hipkins said that "I think there is some con- cern about sort of elevated levels of race baiting at the moment, to use a fairly blunt term. And, you know, I share some of those concerns."

He also talked about driving "a wedge between Maori and non-Mãori New Zealanders."

It is a good reminder that one person's dog whistle is another person's commonsense. And a key debate in this election is now shaping up as one over race, ethnicity and the institutions that support them - co- governance in particular.

NZME will make a lot of noise this week about how much Labour's promises are gonna cost, and it's worth comparing to the noise the same journos made about the cost of the coalition's RONS (over $56b) – i.e. when they even bothered to mention it, it was hidden behind innocuous framing and paywalls.

"My co-worker Mike Hosking skewered the Labour leader with incorrect figures! I declare this a draw!" Honestly, Audrey Young continues to be a parody of herself.
Audrey Young, NZ Herald: "One-all on housing

Hipkins was aggressive, but so was Hosking. He tried to skewer Hipkins on how a capital gains tax would raise what Labour had calculated, given that the Treasury has since slashed forecasts for house price growth. Hipkins said his economic advisers had told him the Treasury forecasts were more than the 3% average over the forecast period, but Hosking insisted otherwise.

Like Ginny Andersen lecturing Mark Mitchell in recent weeks on how “wrong” he was about transport funding, Hosking lectured Hipkins about how he had been wrongly advised. “The forecasts tell you very clearly the 3% is not there.”

Only they don’t. The forecast for the next four June years (including the current one) is for an average 3.12% growth in house prices. The forecast over the four years beginning in the 2027-28 financial year – when the CGT would kick in – is 3.75%. Hosking skewered Hipkins, but it was on the basis of incorrect figures. Hipkins wasn’t familiar enough with the numbers to have skewered Hosking. One-all. Hipkins has since familiarised himself with the forecasts that back up what he was told by his advisers."

I don't really want the guy who makes sure Mike Hosking is happy running our public service broadcaster. The country's a much better place when Hosking is fucking miserable.
Media Insider, NZ Herald: "‘Staino’ is a man on the move, splitting his workday between the first-floor NZ Herald-Newstalk ZB newsroom and the ground-floor suite of entertainment radio stations.

The first two hours of his day are what I’d describe as the “Hosking Hours” – he’s at the ZB desks, earpods in, listening to what’s coming out of the breakfast show, and making sure the country’s biggest radio talent is, indeed, having a happy day.

“Anything you need?” Winstanley often calls across to Hosking as the broadcaster heads towards the door shortly after 9am. Sometimes there’s a bit of banter; the answer is invariably no."

This is Audrey Young, later in her *same* column, once again repeating National's tax lie, without pushback. It's just a wonder at how it got to be so "effective", eh, Auds?
"He continued National’s tax attack: “You can’t afford a Labour Government. You can’t afford nine new taxes. You can’t afford an $18 billion hole with no plan to pay for it. You can’t afford a four-way coalition with six leaders, spearheaded by Chloe Swarbrick and Rawiri Waititi. You can’t afford to get bribed with your own money. You can’t afford Chris Hipkins.”"

It's okay everyone! Chief ass-coverer Audrey Young has decided Luxon was only saying "cry me a river" to Hipkins, not about the subject Hipkins was talking about. Because it's not like Luxon has a history of openly not caring about ordinary Kiwis... oh wait I'm hearing he has a long history of it
Audrey Young, NZ Herald: "Luxon’s sarcastic boo-hoo response, “cry me a river”, was clearly aimed at Hipkins, but Labour has decided that two can play the “bull****” game and is depicting it as Luxon’s attitude to ordinary Kiwis.

This is what went down in Parliament.

Hipkins: “When real wages have fallen, power prices have gone up, insurance prices have gone up, rates have gone up, insurance has gone up – all by more than 20%, under his leadership, in just the last two years – will he now admit that the cost-of-living crisis is not only not over; it’s getting worse under his leadership?”

Luxon: “What I’d say, again – you know, cry me a river”.

This is how that exchange ended up in Hipkins’ speech: “You can choose a Prime Minister who will fight to get your costs down. Or a Prime Minister whose response to rising prices was ‘cry me a river’. "

This tired excuse, trotted out by Stuff's Editor in Chief, always avoids the reality: that you intentionally publish divisive material to drive engagement, because that's your entire business model. So stop acting like it's some moral position for a news org to knowingly publish hate and even lies.
Keith Lynch, Stuff: "This year, though, we have been (and will continue to) bolster our stable of columnists. While our news reporters do not (and will not) offer opinions on what they report on, it is healthy for news media to showcase a wide and diverse range of opinions.

We will continue to try and showcase a range of voices from a range of political and demographic perspectives. We’ll sometimes publish columns you disagree with or make you angry. We’ll sometimes publish columns that you nod along to or fully agree with. This is healthy. You should be exposed to people and opinions you disagree with."
