Serb nationalism and Zionism are very similar. Serbs and Jews were both victims of Nazi genocide in WWII. The nationalism of both fused victimhood with chauvinism. Both nationalisms argued that they were merely rectifying a historical wrongdoing their peoples had suffered.

Amazingly, Brits still talk about "negotiations". There are no negotiations to enter the EU. There are only countries found to meet membership conditions, as confirmed by the EC and approved by all MS. Conditions are set in 35 acquis chapters, progress of alignment with monitored by the EC annually.

European political elites need to understand that if they say European security isn't possible without the US, they are actually saying that European security isn't possible. For many reasons, they don't want to accept that, but they urgently need to.

No, that is not the difference at all. The difference is that Poland and Russia had and have radically different political and social cultures, which led to radically different behaviours and policies. They were both countries with agency, not puppets of external forces.

And explains a piece of domestic Israeli politics where a good portion of the population resents Arabs for their association with the governments that actually oppressed them in their lifetimes. The Cold War still matters.

I don't think we disdain the center-right enough. First, they rode nativist populist tigers to power to get their tax cuts and deregulation; Then, they lost control of their own parties to those tigers; Now, they sit in lucrative jobs as columnists writing about how it's all the left's fault.

‘The butcher may be gone, but to many he is a hero’: victims condemn glorification of Mladić
Architect of Srebrenica genocide is dead but those scarred by his atrocities say his ideology is still shockingly pervasive To most of the world, he was and will always be the “Butcher of Bosnia”, a grim epithet but one that still fails to fully convey the evil and horror inflicted on its people by Gen Ratko Mladić, who died in prison on Thursday. As commander of the Bosnian Serb forces, Mladić was responsible for the killing of an estimated 100,000 men, women and children during the savage breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. He was most notoriously the architect of ethnic cleansing and the genocide at Srebrenica in which at least 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were slaughtered. Continue reading...

Rule of law problems in Poland and Bulgaria are but the same. Using Poland to advocate for Western Balkan EU accession is wrong. Bulgaria and its western Balkan neighbours share much more in common when it comes to rule of law deficiencies - it's not about the primacy of EU law over national but 1/2

Having lived through several wars in what was once known as Yugoslavia, this was the hardest part to explain to people from "the west" - the war is awful but it's not a movie where you constantly dodge bullets and move from one underground shelter to another. Life very much goes on.
