FACT CHECK: Were the Geneva Conventions Made Because of Canada?
You've probably seen the claim online: Canadian soldiers were so brutal in World War One and World War Two that the world had to rewrite the rules of war just to contain us. It's a great story.
It's also completely false.
In this video, I break down where this myth actually comes from, what really happened with Canadian troops in the trenches of the First World War, and why the real history of the Geneva Conventions has nothing to do with Canada at all.
I also get into the real, complicated history: Canada's fearsome reputation in WWI, what historians like Tim Cook actually say about our wartime conduct, and the 1993 Somalia Affair, a case where Canadian soldiers did commit war crimes and were held accountable for it.
It's time we replace the fake war story with real ones, because we don't need myths to be proud of this country.
