Margaret Jane 'Nellie' Bryant. Born October 2, 1864 (1865?) Iroquois, Canada West (Ontario).
Died July 14, 1947, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Although Nellie intended to be a school teacher when a photographer saw some sketches he offered to teach her photograph retouching methods. This led to a life-long career as a photographer. She started doing tintype and daguerreotype photographs in Ontario at Morrisburg, Augustburg, and the Thousand Islands. After working at a studio in the Thousand Islands for seven years, she started her own studio at Iroquois, later moving to Brockville, Ontario. In 1901, following her marriage, she moved to Winnipeg with her salesman husband, Harry H.Bryant, and opened a studio on Fort Street. “Mother and Daughter” is a celebrated, heartfelt painting by Cree artist Betty Albert that explores the sacred bond, lineage, and spiritual connection between generations. Distributed widely across North America as part of The Indigenous Collection and available through galleries like Whetung Ojibwa Centre, this piece is deeply rooted in the artist's personal journey of cultural reclaiming and Cree traditions.
🎨 Visual Description & Artistic Style
• Faceless Figures: A hallmark of this artwork—and much of Albert's portfolio—is that the figures are depicted without facial features. Albert has noted that the people who appear to her in her dreams are faceless, a phenomenon she translates directly onto her canvas. This stylistic choice allows the viewer to project their own relationships onto the canvas, turning it into a universal mirror of family connection.
• Vibrant Acrylics & Nature Themes: Painted in vivid acrylic colors, the work often integrates moon imagery and fluid lines that mimic the natural world. The composition physically reflects an embrace, utilizing curved lines to signify comfort, safety, and an eternal maternal circle.
• Focus on Women's Spirituality: The structure emphasizes the divine feminine, portraying women as the keepers of culture, life, and emotional lineage.
🌟 Deep Meaning & Cultural Significance
• Intergenerational Guidance: The painting reflects the transfer of wisdom, love, and protection from a mother to her daughter. It acts as a visual representation of how traditions survive through time.
• Reclaiming Identity: The artwork carries intense personal meaning for Albert. Adopted and raised by a French-Canadian family in Northern Ontario, she did not discover her birthright as a Cree woman until her early thirties. Reconnecting with her biological father, Lindbergh Louttit, sparked a spiritual awakening. "Mother and Daughter" encapsulates that profound sense of discovering one's roots, ancestral family, and true heritage

The Galgapola Flag
The flag serves as a symbol of unity, presence, and reconciliation. It adapts the traditional Canadian flag by embedding West Coast Indigenous imagery:
• The Maple Leaf: Replaced by or featuring the stylized head of an orca (killer whale).
• The Red Side Bands: Replaced with designs depicting K'utala-Salmon. The artist chose salmon to represent the immense diversity of Canada's people, noting that there are as many types of people in the country as there are types of salmon.

FALL FLOATING rob gonsalves en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Gon... #canada #painting #artist #art #CanadianHistory
"Fall Floating" is a magical realism optical illusion painting by Canadian artist Rob Gonsalves that depicts rowboats floating on a leaf-covered lake which simultaneously transitions into the sky.
Overview of "Fall Floating"
• Artist: Rob Gonsalves (1959–2017), a prominent Canadian painter known for magic realism and perspective-bending works.
• The Illusion: The artwork shows small rowboats navigating a calm body of water, while the surface of the water—filled with autumn leaves—seamlessly mirrors or transitions into an open sky, making the boats appear as though they are floating both on water and through the air.
• Style: Like his other famous works (such as The Phenomenon of Floating), Gonsalves uses precise architectural and natural alignments to blur the boundaries between distinct physical realities

DELUGED rob gonsalves en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Gon... #canada #painting #artist #art #CanadianHistory
Deluged is a magic realism painting and limited-edition giclée print by Canadian artist Rob Gonsalves that plays with perception, mass conformity, and clarity.
About the Artwork
• The Visual Illusion: The piece depicts a crowd of people holding up a sea of uniform umbrellas as if caught in a heavy downpour. However, a closer look at the surroundings reveals that the sky is bright and blue, the ground is completely dry, and the "rain" is actually an open body of water or ocean in the background.
• The Meaning: A single figure perched high up in a tree sees past the illusion and observes the truth of the situation. The painting challenges viewers to question collective behavior, what they accept as reality, and the tendency to follow the crowd blindly.
• The Artist: Rob Gonsalves (1959–2017) was a Toronto-born painter renowned for his precise, seamless perspective shifts that blend human imagination with real-world architecture.
