A couple of days ago, Australia post started a promo with HBO for the Harry Potter TV series. It you noticed the app logo changed to incorporate an owl, that's why. A bunch of people sent in complaints about the association with that revolting TERF JK Rowling. Today they replied. Partnership ended!
Screenshot of an email from AusPost replying to my complaint sent in yesterday. It reads:

Thank you for contacting Australia Post.

Australia Post is an inclusive organisation that values diversity and is committed to fostering a respectful and welcoming environment for all people, including LGBTQIA+ communities.

The Harry Potter Owl Post Experience was a promotional fan event delivered in partnership with HBO Max to celebrate letter writing and provide an engaging experience for Harry Potter fans.

We apologise if the activation has left you disappointed. We understand your concerns and your feedback has been heard and shared with the relevant teams. As a result, the partnership has now ended. Your feedback will also inform how we think about future partnerships and activations.

This is the most fucked up and immediately harmful policy decision I think I've ever seen in adult trans healthcare in the UK, and that's saying something. The Welsh Gender Service is one of the best in the country. It is widely praised by the patients it helps. That is why it is being targeted.

Our commentary piece on “Misuse of evidence in sex and gender policy” is out! We call for greater integrity and transparency in evidence use, and for meaningful inclusion of trans people’s experiences and expertise in policymaking utppublishing.com/doi/10.3138/...
Graphic with a white background that presents information about a commentary piece published in the International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics. It includes the title (“Misuse of evidence in sex and gender policy”), authors, abstract and keywords.

- Authors: Tomás Ojeda, Madeleine Pape, D.M. Grijseels, Eric Llaveria Caselles, Sheree Bekker, Jean-Sébastien Blanc, Dinah Bons, Guylaine Demers, Tara Gonsalves, Sarah Lamble, Ruth Pearce, and Valo Vähäpassi.

- Abstract: Sex and gender policy has become a battleground for attacks on science and expertise. As researchers committed to rigorous evaluation of evidence, the authors examine how evidence is used and misused in debates on sex and gender policy affecting transgender people. Drawing on examples from healthcare, prison housing, and sport, they identify recurring pitfalls: elevating opinion as evidence, excluding trans expertise, discrediting scientific consensus, deploying decontextualized claims, and the influence of scientific disinformation. Amid rising societal transphobia, the authors call for greater integrity and transparency in evidence use, and for meaningful inclusion of trans people’s experiences and expertise in policymaking.

- Keywords: Evidence; Transgender People; Policy; Expertise; Gender-Affirming Care; Prison Housing; Sport.

Based on Stephenson's appalling quote, I've followed the evidence for identifying the sex of people by their face. The original study [Bruce et al 1993] asked participants to separate laser scans of (Caucasian) faces. "Laser profiles of females gave rise to high [38.9%] error rates." 1/
Photographs of 88 female and 91 male adults (aged 18 to 30 years) were taken in full face, with a neutral expression, and with each wearing a swimming cap to conceal hair. No makeup was worn by the females and the males were clean-shaven (and had shaved recently). Prints of these pictures were made and the faces cut out from the background to remove all clothing and any stray wisps of hair that might otherwise have been visible. Masking fluid was painted onto the earlobes of all faces to conceal all earrings (some photos had been taken with studs left in inadvertently) and earpiercing holes. The photographs were given to 13 subjects unfamiliar with the faces shown in the photographs and the subjects were asked to sort, without time constraints, the photographs into two piles according to sex. Performance was highly accurate (96.0% correct). The majority (3/4) of the errors were made in judging female faces as male: overall accuracy for female faces was 93.8% compared with 98.2% with the male. Table showing reaction times and error rates in identifying faces. A red box highlights an error rate of 38.9% for laser scanned faces in profileFigure 1. Examples of the representations of the shape of the head produced from measurement by a laser scanner and display of the multi-faceted surface with the use of Gouraud lighting. Four different views are shown of the head of an adult female, scanned while wearing a swimming cap.

🧵New report from the @childrenscomm.bsky.social shines a bright light on a broken care pathway for children and young people experiencing gender dysphoria. Most get nothing. Only 15% get referred on to the Gender Service, and only 15% assessed / treated for co-occurring mental health need.
Text reads: Children also faced long waits for treatment for gender discomfort issues despite the relatively low number of children being referred for support via CYPMHS. 70% of children referred for gender discomfort issues were still waiting at the end of 2024-2025. Children experiencing gender dysphoria (described in the data as gender discomfort) are referred through CYPMHS or community health services to children and young people's gender services and may also have a co-occurring mental health condition they may need support for via CYPMHS. The data the Office received does not necessarily bear this pathway out. Only a small proportion (15%) had their referral closed (referral closure can indicate a referral on to specialist gender service, and only a small proportion received treatment or assessment for co-occurring mental health needs (15%)
