By day, recovering economist and lender with a heart at Student Freedom Fund. On here, mostly random thoughts. I like science fiction, biotechnology, household finance, causal inference, home fermentation, and powerlifting.

That phenomenon in which you say a word many times and it starts to feel like it isn’t a real word, but entire sentence structure edition. Thank you, LLMs!

That would help, but I think they might need to reconsider the treatment of capital gains too.

i personally would like to live in a large house in a nature preserve with no neighbors that is a five minute walk from grocery stores, nightlife and amenities, a good school, and my six-figure job. i don't see why this is so difficult

If AI suppresses white-collar workers' wages, it will suppress their ability to consume expensive products supplied by large firms, too, and thereby their markup pricing and market share. So, it's another paradox for large firms. x.com/Kalshi_Finan...

New survey data from the Philadelphia Fed shows that financially-distressed borrowers deprioritize student loans relative to housing, auto loans, and credit cards www.philadelphiafed.org/-/media/FRBP...
Dot plot showing the difference in payment probability of auto loans, credit cards, and student loans relative to housing. The probabilities are approximately -10pp for auto loans, -30pp for credit cards, and -50pp for student loans.

My friend who works in education always says that we want education to solve all our society's problems, when we should see those problems as something we must solve in order to have good education

Research is not going to stop. What is on the table can only realistically be what they will release. Which means it is a boon to the companies and has no meaningful impact on the ultimate threat to humanity.

Also, agreeing not to release does not forestall a continued arms race in the shadows within the labs. And you can see how that possibility both undermines the safety impact and undermines the necessary trust.

Thank you for putting these things out to help someone like me understand. As a person who was born a boy never felt like being a boy required any conscious effort (fish not noticing water), trans is harder to understand than something where I can reason by analogy from something I have experienced.

We are. And I fear that the wealthy are all too aware and will do things to try to prepare for and forestall a violent backlash that will make life less pleasant both before, during, and after it inevitably comes.

Look at how much people like being retired. You have to ask how much people fear technology’s relentless march because they want to be able to do a job and how much it is because they fear losing their livelihood and dignity—both of which we could as a society separate from the jobs we each do.

I am finding religion hits different when you’ve reached a certain stage of development. It’s like the difference between LARPing as a wizard and thinking you can only play if you believe you are literally a wizard. Meeting nice people and playing pretend with cool rituals and good food is dope.

We have been asking this question since the beginning! Also, we are already in the moment when there are tons of things going on all around us and nobody has any idea what's happening or why. Why do we tolerate school shootings? Climate change? Tariffs? We are in over our heads…always have been.

I don’t think of the singularity as the moment when there is no labor remaining that a human can do that an adequately provisioned machine cannot. Rather, I see the singularity as the moment when the rate of technological change itself outstrips our human ability to metabolize the developments.

Barry Cynamon @cynamon.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
I don’t think so. Machines have been replacing human labor for millennia, starting with simple machines. Humans have been on an exponential curve for a long time, with each generation receiving a substantial stock of capital from its forebears. Part of that capital is “technology” broadly.

If it’s possible for a human mind to do something more than brute force, when do the systems eliminate the last remaining bit of whatever that special distinct thing is?
