Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

(From that perspective, the Luddites were pretty damn literate with regards to the new technology of their time!)

Literacy would not just be knowing how and when to use these tools, but also knowing how and when to question the framing of these tools, the language used to talk about these tools, and the methods used to train others on these tools.

Literacy isn't just understanding how to use these tools, or understanding how they work and their limitations, but also understanding how technology like this changes social interactions, may challenge human rights, and what it means to incorporate these tools into work and everyday life.

At the @chaisenetwork.bsky.social launch event this week we talked a lot about AI literacy, but we were pushing for an expansive understanding of literacy in terms of how the existence of these tools changes our relationships with one another and beyond.

Weizenbaum warned us about this in the 1960s. He worried that if we kept calling AI 'intelligent' we would lose the meaning of the word 'intelligence' and mistake the simulation for reality. And that is simulacra. Now I wonder if we're about to do the same thing with care, friendship and love.

Artificial Artificial Intelligence strikes again when the promises of tech companies fail to deliver. Sure, a robot might do your job for you. But it is also possible that that robot will be you.

“I either pay zero attention to the results and choose randomly or purposely choose the [worst] output. I’m not sure how much of a difference it actually makes since there are hundreds of other people also rating prompt results, but it does feel like I’m getting paid to make AI worse.” 👏

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.
