100%! The climate doesn't care if we are Democrats or Republicans: When we mess with it, it messes with us (and it bats last). Most Americans are concerned about climate change. Let's set aside partisan differences & solve this problem before it messes more with what we love. @katharinehayhoe.com

We Need to Stop Talking Like Climate Change Is Partisan
Climate change should be seen as a shared challenge to solve together, not a political debate, write Katharine Hayhoe and Dana R. Fisher.

I don’t understand the hand-wringing reaction to claims that nueral networks have a 10% chance of destroying civilisation. Fossil fuel companies have a 100% chance of initiating a mass extinction event. Maybe we could address that?

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

@grayflood.bsky.social: We need to replace our current approach to addressing cost-shifting by data centers–bespoke BYOG contracts and large load tariffs with their "myopic calculation of cost-causation"—with a federal data center excise tax & general fund transfers paid into a Grid Trust Fund.

GA residents are grappling w the likely impacts of OpenAI's proposed data center outside Savannah. USC's Sanders: there's "no free lunch" with the proposed closed loop cooling system. It would use less water, but the big fans that eject heat from the buildings would use "a lot" of electricity.

Reducing the water use on site at the proposed OpenAI data center will drive up its power-related water consumption offsite, experts say.

Not sure if everyone appreciates the difference. Rooftop solar hardwires into your main panel via a dedicated breaker, so it requires a permit, an installer, an electrician, and a utility agreement. Balcony solar just plugs into a wall outlet, sharing an existing circuit with no permits or rewiring.

The next tipping point in the energy transition is approaching. Overall, solar has already been cheaper than fossil power for a while, but upfront costs used to be higher. That's no longer the case. Solar is now competitive upfront AND has vastly lower operating costs (no fuel).

EVs beat petrol cars on lifetime emissions — even on “dirty” grids. Battery production is carbon-intensive, but EVs quickly repay that debt and end up 21–71% cleaner over 250,000 km. We can’t wait for perfect grids: electrify transport and clean the grid now.

Overpumping of groundwater accounts for 44‰ of global sea level rise—versus 37% from Greenland + 19% from Antarctica. Because after water is put to human use, it escapes into the ocean. And groundwater is a finite resource. In some areas, so much has already been drained, aquifers have collapsed

Groundwater is drying out, heating up, and causing sea level rise
Overuse of groundwater has created zones of “mega-drying” around the world — and caused more sea level rise than Greenland’s ice sheets.
