China's 'dormitory labour regime' is going global. Comparing SEZs in India and Uganda, Charlotte Goodburn shows how Chinese-inspired industrial zones build gendered workplace–residence systems that discipline migrant women's fertility and daily lives, while externalising the long-term costs.

The level of detail in photos from this archive is extraordinary. This is Blyvoor Gold Mine around 1953. You can see the prison-like compound for African workers (centre), white tailings dams, uranium plant and Westdene mine housing, later swallowed by a sinkhole.
Black-and-white aerial photograph of a large industrial mining complex. The image features a sprawling network of processing plants, rows of storage tanks, and a massive, white-coloured tailing pile in the centre, with a residential town stretching across the landscape in the background.

A historic reversal: Mining companies used to pay smelters $100 a tonne to treat their metal, now smelters pay mining companies $100 a tonne for metal because of intense competition between Chinese smelters. This is what countries planning to become richer by mineral processing are competing with:

People often say Zambia's state-owned mining industry ran a 'cradle-to-grave' welfare system but this description was literally true. The state mining company provided nappies and nighties for every newborn baby. This is what someone born in 1989 got:
Table in an old report labelled "Birth Grants". It shows each newborn was supposed to get 10 nappies, a nightie, 2 pants, 1 shawl and 2 vests.

Bar chart of the change in China’s electricity generation from 2024 to 2025 compared to the annual electricity generation of other countries, where China’s 2025 increase is about 497 TWh—mostly from solar (340 TWh) and wind (140 TWh)—roughly the size of Germany’s annual generation and larger than countries like South Africa, Italy, Australia, Spain, and the UK (240 to 290 TWh) but smaller than France (570 TWh) and Brazil (750 TWh). Since Artemis will orbit the moon today, sharing one of the all-time great Chinese propaganda posters, in which the moon rabbit gives a bouquet to the world’s most cherubic astronaut. The late scholar Stefan Landsberger used this as the cover of his wonderful book of Chinese posters.
Alt text: Vintage Chinese propaganda poster showing a smiling toddler in an orange romper and silver helmet styled like a space suit, sitting on a toy rocket and reaching toward a white rabbit that offers a bouquet of flowers. The child wears a toy camera and is surrounded by dreamy imagery including stars, a temple, doves, and a small astronaut figure in the background, creating a whimsical space-age scene. I keep seeing this incredibly silly map of copper producers showing "spheres of influence that are quickly becoming spheres of control". Both the premise (is the US going to control Brazil because Brazil produces 1% of the world's copper? No) and the details are wrong.
Map of the world entitled "Copper Extraction Spheres of Control"
The map is divided into a blue American sphere, a red Chinese sphere, a yellow Russian sphere, a green "coalition of the willing" and a little blue undrafted sphere. The map shows Latin Ameria as part of the American sphere and countries adjacent to China and in Central Africa as part of the Chinese sphere.

X post: One interesting difference I've noticed between the West and China, that few speak about, is the difference in approach when it comes to narrative management.

To a large extent the West's approach is to change the narrative in order to change reality, whereas China's approach is almost the opposite: change reality in order to change the narrative. It's basically materialism vs idealism.
