While we obviously miss the child's hairy big sister terribly, I would prefer not to subject a new, poor unsuspecting hound to grabby face cuddles

This evening in the middle of her dinner (fish fingers, peas and potatoes) the toddler demanded her "phone" (an oblong plastic cutlery case with a cartoon lion face on), held it to her ear and said "hello, potato?", so frankly anything else that happens today can just pack up and go home

Terrible dilemma because the toddler biting daddy's toes *is* in fact funny, and surely telling her it *isn't* is lying and thus setting a bad example? So morally speaking I think I am covered for laughing at that

Sounds that don't wake my sleeping toddler 1) neighbouring car alarms 2) dramatic thunderclaps 3) loud music outside Sounds that do wake my sleeping toddler 1) the creak of my bra strap as I straighten up after putting her down in her cot 2) hot water hitting a teabag several rooms away 3) vibes

I was chuffed to be asked to write the entry for Mary Hamilton (1756-1816)in the Palgrave Encyclopaedia of Romantic-Era Women's Writing. Do check it out (or contact me) if you want a bang up to date overview of Hamilton's life, writing, & relevant scholarship. link.springer.com/rwe/10.1007/...
Abstract
Mary Hamilton (1756–1816) was one of the most well-connected and highly cultured women in late eighteenth-century British polite society. She was a courtier, diarist, antiquarian, and active member of the Bluestocking circle. Although her writing was never published during her lifetime, she was a prolific writer in several genres. She kept detailed diaries of her daily life, social engagements, and travels, wrote probably thousands of letters to her friends and acquaintances, compiled manuscript books of poetry and prose, and made catalogues of the collections of her eminent friends. A careful archivist and antiquarian, she left behind a vast and valuable archive of over 3000 written items, which has recently been fully digitized as The Mary Hamilton Papers. Hamilton was a pivotal figure in the dynamic manuscript culture of the Bluestocking circle during the 1780s, and was herself a skilled life writer across a range of forms and media. In particular, her extant correspondence reveals a wily, adroit, and flexible epistolary artist, capable of adopting different voices, techniques, strategies and personae to achieve specific ends. In the past, her reputation as an author has suffered from a critical presumption that print publication is a prerequisite for literary significance. However, if we accept manuscript culture and life writing as crucial elements of the literary landscape of late eighteenth-century Britain, Mary Hamilton emerges as an important and often innovative figure whose achievements invite us to re-scope our understanding of literature itself.

Tomorrow I have to not only dress myself for a wedding in the heat but also a toddler (which means at least three outfits for when she gets covered in tomato/cottage cheese/unidentified green) and I'm thinking - maybe we are a mumu family now?

Totally reinforces my belief that answering an incomprehensible question by feigning understanding and interest WITH ANOTHER QUESTION is bulletproof conference technique: Toddler: mummy blah blee blah bloo blah? Me: I'm not sure, what do you think? Toddler: yeah!!!!
