An Irish Atlantic Rainforest will be screening again in Cork next week. FYI, the film is *very* different to the tv version on RTÉ Player: much more immersive and meditative... You really feel like you've been transported into the rainforest. triskelartscentre.ie/events/an-ir...

I saw on your timeline a mention of John Barnes. It was sad & frustrating to see what athletes like John, Emile Heskey, Norman Cowans et al went through for so many years. The England football team now is a beautiful thing & a beautiful thing about it is no one thinks to mention anyone’s colour.

I got flak here for asking people to imagine how strange it was for people like my grandma in a working class area of Leeds to see without warning a large number of strange people who spoke no English arrive in a house across the street. People here couldn’t get it. I could see that as a good thing.

Change never suits all the people all the time. For sure not in UK just now. I get that. I see so much rage on both sides of the immigration debate. It’s never been easy, but now a lot of issues are colliding and on social media there’s little tolerance for complexity, and it’s a complex situation.

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Whether or not that is true I didn’t comment on any individual country’s immigration policy. In the case of Britain I recall what Bonnie Greer once said ~ “This is the only country I know that constantly changes its self image to include the new from outside.” I’ve lived to see & celebrate that.

Would someone here tell me how this statement from me legitimises racism ? I’ve left out the name of the man who made the initial comment. I have no problem with him or what he said. But someone here has been trying for two days now to get me to confess to the racist content of my reply ~

I’m genuinely mystified. Do you think it’s racist to wish for a world without border controls, or racist to accept border controls are at present a fact of life ?

Late morning in Kyiv after the overnight attack. Soon, I’m going to my workout. As usual on Wednesdays. Perhaps you’ve read about the casualties and damage. Not only in Kyiv. I hope you have. I don’t open the windows. The city is covered in smoke.

But it’s a statement of fact that Zionism is racism. Jewishness is a race and a religion as a Jewish friend told me. Israel is a state founded on a racial privilege sanctified by God. And if we don’t face it their overt aspiration since Ben Gurion has been a holy land from the Nile to the Euphrates.

Ok. That’s your answer. Let’s not waste any more of each other’s time. Enjoy your achievements.

No. I did. More people means more consumption or a drop in consumption per person. I heard the average UK citizen takes 400 showers a year. The total UK appetite for meat requires a land area bigger than the UK. More & more houses will be lost to flood. Something has to change. I’m asking your view
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
You want a growing UK population to service a growing economy to generate taxes to meet the needs of a growing population. Ok. Do you foresee any limit ? I’d agree we could make room for more with some lifestyle changes. Water & food scarcity is a growing problem. Take less showers. Eat less meat.

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Tell that to two people here who’ve reported their families scared to leave their houses when racist mobs are on their streets. The longer I spend on it the harder it is to see a way ahead. Both sides insist their answer is simple & the other side is deluded or evil. Neither tells me how it works.

Every country on Earth exercises choice in who they let in. You can indeed say the whole structure of nation states is built on tribalism & it would be good to evolve past it but this country can’t dissolve it alone. So meanwhile i guess you want us to change our criteria of selection. Ok. How ?

Show me what’s in your lane & it might help me pick mine. What do you think needs to happen in the UK immigration system ?
000
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
And again, I’m not complaining. I’m trying to express a point of view and understand what comes back. I want people who advocate UK population continuing to grow by the number of net immigrants arriving annually to explain where these extra people live, what jobs will be available, what we eat etc.

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Integration of diversity requires some social cohesion. Otherwise it disintegrates. Immigrants and the poor suffer first. The rage I see from both sides of the debate threatens our social cohesion. So I’ll stay out of either trench line trying to reach both & getting called names by both. For now.

Something unusual is happening in Kyiv. Calm. Since last night. It’s 4 pm. This calm feels like a spider’s web. Delicate. Fragile. May the spider keep doing its job.

She didn’t do either. She even learned to read. Try it. You have no idea do you ? Centuries of training in xenophobia, endless wars, poverty, fear of joblessness, religious headbanging. That’s what new immigrants were dropped into. Yes there was trouble. I’m talking about what they created together

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I did think about it. I stand by it. You propose opening the country’s borders, ie removing all migration controls ? A few people here were advocating that. Otherwise what don’t you like in what I said ? I’m not saying it’s a desirable condition, just a fact of life at present we have to face.
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I could agree with that. But we’re talking about impact on jobs not the nature of consciousness- unless you prefer that … Entry level jobs in US legal firms were down over 10% I read early this year. You don’t think the impact on work and economic output per person employed will spread & grow ?

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I have no problem with that. Do you see me legitimising raciam ?

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Have I ? Must have missed that. Senile no doubt. Does that stop me asking someone who’s studied these trends ?
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
No. I’m in this conversation trying to find a way forward together. I keep saying for me a vital part of that is a way that takes enough people with us to keep Farage out of no.10. We can disagree on a lot, but unless you’re someone who wants a social crisis to spark revolution let’s agree on that
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Good. That’s the only reason I’m still talking. I get your point, perhaps not very well. Immigration has been a positive force in my life. I think if you ask them right most native born people here my age would agree. You accept to extend your graphs into the future we must factor in AI ?

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
That’s sad. When Hanif Kureishi said c.1999 he thought the response of the native UK population to post WWII mass migration had been admirable ~ his words ~ I thought we’d come through something together out of our old black & white steak & kidney past into a brighter place. I still believe we can.

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I’m not cheerleading for them. But 70% win elections. In fact 30% might do it in our present system. So do you advocate a campaign of civil disobedience like the Suffragettes to open the UK up for more immigration ?
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
No. I’m neither entitled nor mediocre. But you don’t know that & I don’t know you, and I doubt if anyone else in this conversation gives a fuck. If you’ve got anything else but insults to contribute here that would be nice.

Tell me what I’m whinging about. What am I refusing to know ? I’ve learned stuff while in this conversation, though not much of it from the comments. I didn’t understand IHS. I didn’t know net immigration for C21 so far. I didn’t know BlueSky can be a malevolent cesspit well up to X standards.

For anyone here interested in facts ~ Immigration Health Surcharge exemptions & refunds Before anyone jumps on me again I’m not saying it’s all fine, just here is what it is. IHS does not apply to all immigrants. Of course there is scope to change the exemption parameters.
000
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Ok pal. I’m out of here. I was trying to understand a system whose complexities, exemptions, refunds etc I was unaware of. But I think I’ll take your advice. Fuck off yourself.

Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Oh no. I can only envy your innate grasp of unemployment rates & annual net migration figures for this century. Clearly I’m unworthy. Don’t waste any more of your valuable time with me. Please.
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Ok I don’t understand the NHS surcharge. It would make new immigrants pay for their health care ?
200
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Explain. There’s nothing about net migration in that graph. You think the 2008 global credit crunch was caused by a fall in UK net immigration ? Net UK immigration in 2010 was 252,000, highest annual rate in history until then.
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
DeepSeek got it from official figures. If you think they’re incorrect show us. Just what is wrong with you today ?
100
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I don’t see that. I think those measures are a crude attempt to manipulate the numbers in time for the next election & won’t last. Could be wrong. If you know something different, tell me. For example how many of the near 900,000 immigrants who arrived last year would be affected ?
200
Steve Webster @croft1a.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Try to get through a post without a stupid insult. I know it’s hard. You sure ? I get this from DeepSeek~ UK unemployment rate is 4.9% , with roughly 1.78 million people unemployed . OECD notes the UK labour market has shown signs of weakening, with unemployment 0.5% higher than a year earlier .
