I've heard the name Glen Powell before. I've Googled to see what Glen Powell looks like. I suspect I may have seen a film or two that Glen Powell is in. Somehow, I still don't know who Glen Powell is. I can only conclude that the guy may be the most intrinsically forgettable celebrity in existence.

B/c I love Trek, even when I dislike it, I'd be glad to hear that it picks up again in the second half of S4, if you find it does.

I'm definitely willing to believe the fundamental problems (or at least things I personally dislike in the later seasons) were there in embryo early on. Another reason not to rewatch S1 and S2 in case I notice them more. At least those problems were outweighed in the early seasons by what workedwell

Came late to this so could well be repeating a (deservedly) popular answer, but Iago. I don't love everything Shakespearean, but Iago is sublime in his evil: grand evil, petty evil, understandable motivations named, but the possibility of "motiveless malignity" is very much alive beneath them

When young, I saw many writers I highly esteem identify this as, essentially, a novel they (and no one else) can top. I thought, "sure, sure, who doesn't like a bit of hyperbole. i'm sure it's fine." Then I read it, and I kind of have to agree with them.

I've tended to read it as a love poem, but the love is definitely not directed toward the addressee. The love is more a self-directed love, an egoistic appreciation for the arcane power of a wordsmith who can overcome the flaws and limitations of a natural world through his artifice.

The notion that an institution deserves loyalty instantly makes me see red. If they pay me, they deserve the contractualy mandated teaching hours, my professional/respectful conduct with students & colleagues, etc. I owe the institution the same amount of loyalty I owe my internet provider.
