AI companies keep doing this winking self-parody and it is not cute. Remember the flipside of the tale, "black man is too incompetent to do his job without Apple Intelligence"? The ad has been memory-holed, probably not because embarrassing but because Apple were slow to launch their LLM stuff.
Screenshot from taken-down Apple Intelligence ad where Lance, a Black man, uses AI to summarise a report he hasn't read during a meeting.

Nova Scotia wind, hydrogen site to host $10B AI data centre

October 16th 2026A company pursuing an ambitious wind and hydrogen development in Nova Scotia says it now has plans for a $10-billion AI data centre in southern Cape Breton.

EverWind Fuels said an unnamed “leading frontier AI developer” has signed a 20-year lease for an 18,600-square metre data centre in Point Tupper, N.S., that would draw 95 megawatts of electricity during its first phase. It will come online late next year.

A 325-megawatt expansion is expected in 2028, which would bring the development's total energy demand to 420 megawatts, the company said.

A statement from the company described the proposed project as the largest private investment in Nova Scotia’s history.

“You often hear that Canada is a resource economy, (but) it's also an intellectual economy,” EverWind CEO Trent Vichie told a news conference in Point Tupper on Friday.

“And we need this type of investment to support that part of the equation. They both play off each other very well, resources and knowledge. And Canadian

I literally laughed out loud when I read this line because it just sounds like something a very corporatised Sisyphus would say
But the industrywide growth of generative A.I., and the resulting building spree of giant data centers that use exponentially more electricity, is making such net-zero goals slip out of reach. Many A.I. data centers are powered by natural gas generators, and some even plan to use nuclear reactors to supply electricity.

Google now says its net-zero ambition “remains a continuous, uphill pursuit” because of the rapid growth of its infrastructure.

Even if future A.I. data centers become more energy efficient, said Professor Lee, it is no longer feasible to supply all of their electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.

“The numbers are just too big,” he said.

Energy ambition
24/7 carbon-free energy—a moonshot we always knew would stretch the limits of what’s possible—remains a North Star for our operational energy strategy.
It enables us to think holistically about grid solutions and ensures our strategies actively drive the technology, transaction, and policy innovations needed
to realize a round-the-clock carbon-free future for everyone. While we’ve made meaningful progress, the rapid growth of our infrastructure—coupled with
persistent external headwinds—means that this ambition remains a continuous, uphill pursuit. Nevertheless, we’re proud of what we have accomplished,
and our focus remains on our ultimate objective: the systemic decarbonization of the grids that support our global operations while strengthening the
stability and long-term affordability of the worldwide energy systems that we all share.sisyphus pushing a boulder up a hill

I'm keenly following Turso's VDBE work, in the hopes that we see a non-SQL relational database built on their "LLVM for databases". If they can provide a highly reliable foundation, we might see more innovation in the database frontend. turso.tech/blog/a-new-m...

We're building Postgres in Rust. Using the LLVM of databases
Turso is becoming the LLVM of databases: one modern, reliable Rust core with many SQL frontends. After rewriting SQLite, we are now building Postgres.

RE enums, I had to take a full detour through game engine entity component systems before coming back to realise why normalisation is a thing. I'm now a "table per feature" maximalist. But even then, I don't think that solves the whole issue.

The relational algebra is great for read-state. But I'm gradually leaning my work, where it makes sense, to separate that out from appended mutations. It took many years to unlearn ActiveRecord style patterns. CQRS and event sourcing (while freighted with a lot of baggage) are good actually!

In my experience in bog standard web dev world, the mutation parts of SQL feel kind of... tacked on? Like, in order to insert n rows of m columns each, I need to prepare a statement with m*n placeholder sigils? That's a bizarre API.

I agree with you, but I would like to say, I think many people mean "LLMs are compilers" in the sense that "LLMs make programming more high level and we will come to accept it in time". I don't see it as dishonest, but it's still essentially an appeal to inevitability, and not a great analogy.
