IIRC they allow "88" if and only if the owner of the vehicle was born in 1988. (obviously not the intent, but some racist got lucky.)

I know I'm not your constituent this cycle, but still have a lot of love for ALX / VA in my heart (hope to be back one day!) — and electoral reform is a worthwhile fight in every legislative chamber across the nation.

You've spoken before about the importance of this reform in the US House — and states are the laboratories of democracy. Would you be interested in helping Virginia lead the nation by reforming how we elect the HoD? Possible without a constitutional amendment, we've used MMDs in the past :-)

A system where third parties can meaningfully challenge incumbents — e.g. Working Families challenging a Dem — would give folks a meaningful choice without needing to "cross the aisle".

100% with you on this, but the popularity comes back to electoral reform IMO (unsurprisingly). People want to have a meaningful choice in their legislative elections, and "deeply-partisan district in a two-party system" + "incumbent bias in partisan primaries" means they rarely do.

*my commute is: 1) either a 20 minute walk or a 6 minute bike 2) a 90-minute coach bus ride 3) either a 10 minute lyft or a 25-minute bike ride So biking is great but does not necessarily change the _bulk_ of my commute

a bench warrant for defaulting in consumer debt litigation is theoretically procedurally valid. it's just so insane that even the American judicial system generally does not do it. Roger Marshall did it 81 times.

The central irony of California's constitution is that they let you vote on any manner of initiative, referendum, or recall — but only have 40 state senators and 80 assemblymembers for the most populous state in the union

The entire state government of California is a parable about how giving people more opportunities to vote on something is not, in fact, the same thing as making your political system more democratic.

It’s actually discouraging how much of the discourse gets diverted to “AI good or AI bad” when the obvious and more pressing issue is “AI *companies* are definitely bad”

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

As others have noted, there are other benefits of shifting from ethanol and gas cars to solar and electric cars, beyond freeing up land for more productive uses (like growing actual food for humans). Those other benefits include much less use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, for example.

Interesting — I had always heard of “unhoused” being distinguished from “homeless” in wonky circles to clarify whether a policy was meant to help those who were couch surfing (but had no permanent “home”) from those sleeping on the sidewalk (who had no “house)

impact is that Sriracha had to scramble & find new red jalapeño suppliers (like your "new pepper")... which lots of long-time Sriracha fans consider to be significantly less tasty. Meanwhile the supplier has released their own competitor (Underwood Ranches Sriracha)!

True Charles @cpaul.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
tl;dr — Sriracha used to be made from red jalapeños specifically sourced from one particular supplier (who, in turn, made most of their money from Sriracha). Eventually Sriracha told them to invest in more production... and immediately cancelled the contract to screw the supplier over.
