Don’t laugh but I like to take pictures of interesting manhole covers & for the past 3 weeks in Japan, Korea, & China I saw some nifty ones, so here’s a lil thread 🧵
Shanghai. It looks like polished copper and it’s the English designed iron camelback truss Waibaidu Bridge over the estuary of the Suzhou Creek near its confluence with the Huangpu River, adjacent to the Bund in central Shanghai. It connects the Huangpu and Hongkou districts and was opened on 20 January 1908

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

My computer screens started failing to resume from sleep (fans would spin up, LEDs are on, no screen wake) Hours spent and nothing worked, until I discovered that one cable I'd replaced (too short) was failing HPD and my KVM was preventing HDP on the other two displays. Maddeningly simple solution!

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

They can't protect you from fascism or racism. They can only report on it after you save yourself, and try to sell you a book about how they knew all along. They've been late to, and on the wrong side of, every civil rights movement in the history of this country, not just back to the 60s.

This is a perfect illustration of why I have no faith in US mainstream journalism to protect us from anything.🤷🏿‍♂️ This is their idea of holding some people accountable: going to their banquets and causing fleeting, awkward moments, seconds before accepting an award from them and shaking their hand.

The short answer to the second question, is no. There is no limit. There is nothing that an in-group "us" politician could do, that would be so irredeemable, that US consensus would be OK with not saying nice things about them when they die. Take all the time that you need to process this.

Ex Pearl Jam drummer David Abbruzzese on Elon Musk and the gutting of USAID. "Fascism survives by turning corpses into math. It sells death as tradeoffs, budget lines, acceptable loss. People who would never step over a dying child on a sidewalk will vote for that spreadsheet every two years."
Elon Musk dared people to name a single person who died because he gutted USAID. Nicholas Kristof answered with names: children, ages, villages, even a five-month-old baby. He dragged the dead out of spreadsheet fog and back into the room. Musk responded with a profanity-laced tantrum, furious that the bodies refused to stay offstage.

Fascism survives by turning corpses into math. It sells death as tradeoffs, budget lines, acceptable loss. People who would never step over a dying child on a sidewalk will vote for that spreadsheet every two years. The spell breaks when the dead arrive one by one with names and faces, so the strongman does the cheapest thing he has. He attacks the witness.

If these estimates hold, Elon Musk helped push millions of human beings, including children, into the kill zone. This is mass death on a historic scale. It belongs in history books beside some of the most repulsive names mankind has produced. Of course he cannot handle names. Names carry funerals, villages, children, and the full human weight of what he did. They pin the crime to the body."
