Guess what? It doesn’t make racist decision making any less so, but it doesn’t make scapegoats it actually helps you deepen understanding of the product’s period then determine lasting impact one historical moment has on another. It also informs more on differences in entertainment demographics.

It’s just so narrow to focus on one company that equally shouldered restrictions on children’s content which were in full force post-columbine and certainly post-9/11 but then not expand scrutiny elsewhere. They were not the only ones butchering shows & sometimes there was an era-specific logic too

VA for dubbing had a different reputation. It paid the bills but wasn’t glamorous. Some were doing it to support themselves to then take off on broadway, stage, etc. the treatment of translation equally had a different vibe especially depending on demographic and reach (on tv, vhs only, etc)

communication was harder, sometimes miscommunication was easier to occur, at times honest mistakes happened. other times even companies that seem to have rosier reputations now were known for not treating the source material well, or being selective of what they treated well or treated like trash

“dub vs sub” was a debate in part due to lack of trust in the dubbed product. This was seen in non-children’s content just as much and often the same issues of orientalist perspectives and outright racism cropped up in them. Saying these are exclusive to 4kids discounts the industry at large failing

the biggest reason I get defensive abt 4kids is they were the dubbing company working actively with more restrictions due to producing children’s content whilst having issues observed in companies throughout the contemporary industry it’s really shallow to talk abt one instance without more context
