I don't have a problem with math being just another dance going forward, but math has not been dance until now.

I am aware of the history of 20th century fascism and grew up around Holocaust survivors. When fascism returns, they said, expect indifference or outright cowardice from 90% of your friends, neighbors and colleagues. AND YET, it still shocks me to see this groveling cowardice in real time.

I say again it’s sort of amazing the libs are getting both Great Books and the Protestant Work Ethic in the national divorce

For what it’s worth, arguing LLMs can’t do addition now is flat earth-level science denialism. Here’s Gemma 4b, a non-reasoning model that could only theoretically memorize binary operations up to 65535 x 65535, oneshotting a eight digit addition and hex conversion *on my phone* with no tool calls

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time: John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team. (Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)

My impression is that it's something to do with treating insane racists as merely mistaken rather than immoral. Also relates to how high decoupling is often just being a mark.

Granted that says nothing about cognitivist meanings, and there is a lot of equivocation in AI discourse (some of it intentional).

Michael J. Corliss @corliss.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
That makes sense for 'cognition', but 'intelligence' seems more ambiguous, with both cognitivist and behaviorist definitions. In a behaviorist sense, something like 'ability to solve novel problems', if the simulation is really solving problems, it's really 'intelligent'.

But simulated music just is music, right? A simulated pattern is a pattern. There are some things where a simulation of the thing just is the thing.

This makes me hopeful. This number is aspirational but nowhere near out of reach: a working professional could realistically cash out their 401k and buy off a public official. Owning a senator is more attainable for most Americans than home ownership.

I recommend both the book and the movie, but I think I prefer the book. It's not as narratively polished, and the movie is more entertaining, but I find the book to be the more valuable text for the modern world.

That's also reinforced by the change in the captain, who in the book is a parallel to Frankenstein's younger seld, and motivated by pure discovery without regard for consequence; in the movie, he's more a contemporary of the older Frankenstain, and his motives are less clear.

Book-Victor was the archetype of 'preoccupied with whether [he] could, [he] didn't stop to think if [he] should". Making it about daddy-issues cheapened that, and somewhat undermines the clear parallels to the people who are seeking to build superhuman minds today.

Michael J. Corliss @corliss.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
But I'm not sure about the change in who Victor was and why he did what he did. In the book, Victor was driven by the pursuit of knowledge; in the movie, it was more like revenge against his father. That eliminates a central theme from Shelley's story, and probably the most relevant to today.

Michael J. Corliss @corliss.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Elizabeth's character is much more interesting in the movie than the book, and I liked how that changed her relationship to Victor and the Creature. I'm no Shelley scholar, but I think it's faithful to the emotional tension she developed in the book, and I think she'd have approved.

Michael J. Corliss @corliss.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
A lot of changes were necessary because the original has weird things that were normal at the time but don't translate for modern audiences, like Victor's father marrying his friend's daughter, and Elizabeth and Victor's siblings/cousins/arranged marriage thing.

The Guillermo del Toro movie inspired the reread, and I waited to watch it until I'd finished. Great movie, not entirely faithful but breaks from the original in interesting ways that I mostly liked.
