I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

The Reason Why Colleges Still Fail to Address Sexual Violence
The “Cornell Seven” case highlights what’s wrong with Trump’s Title IX rules — and how the system was always designed to fail.

Restorative justice also has huge limitations in the context of sexual violence. The perpetrator must confess. There cannot be a structural power disparity between victim and perpetrator. It is not safe for intimate partner violence. It is too time-intensive for victims with multiple perpetrators.

This!! Mandatory reporting was designed with the assumption faculty would NOT report—and instead could be a scapegoat for institutions to avoid legal accountability, e.g. “We have a mandatory reporting policy! If only Professor XYZ would have followed it!”

In many ways, the only thing boys need to learn are the lessons we already teach girls. They need to learn to be part of a community. And if they understand that, then the lessons on consent and sexual violence come naturally.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

I don't actually think my campus is unique in this - I think this is the overall culture of overwork, undersupport, that you see in many unis where people are conned into thinking just because you like the work you do, or you are one of the "lucky" ones, you should sacrifice your health and family.

It's common for survivors of intimate partner sexual assault to not report it, because the existing relationship is used to manufacture reasonable doubt. But "reasonable doubt" is the evidentiary standard for a criminal trial. The standard for "not being a senator" is allowed to be lower.

Highly recommend this interview with Kelly Ritter on the value (and devaluing) of Gen Ed classes in college! (Including a screenshot of an answer I particularly agree with) www.orangeblossomordinary.com/interviews/i...
So many students start their college careers thinking they will do X major, and then take a Gen Ed course in, say, history or political science—or English—and realize they want to major in one of those fields, or at least explore it further. When we track students right into what they think they know, or want, at age 18, we cut off those opportunities for learning. We also make the lines between high school and college (and in some cases, middle school!) completely meaningless by forcing “college-level” courses on 14, 15, and 16 year-olds. College courses are those taught in college classrooms on college campuses. Full stop.

Banned Book Club was about history repeating itself, so we had to include the story of how banned book clubs in America now meet in secret to read it, just like Hyun Sook and her friends did... and she still gets invited to join! It's called Banned Book Club: Afterward.
Banned Book Club Color Edition features a brand new story by authors Kim Hyun Sook and Ryan Estrada about how our book got banned across America. This image includes a preview. A college professor says: "Today's book was banned in Kentucky for being "indecnt." And in Texas for being "filthy and vulgar." It was banned in Florida for the possibility that it would "damage souls" and "create dangerous anarchists." None of the people who said this things about the book bothered to read it. But I trust you all did?" She looks at the students as they pull out their copies of Banned Book Club.
