crunchyroll, netflix, amazon, every big streamer in the west could employ a small army to lovingly localize anime like this at no meaningful cost to them whatsoever, but instead they farm it out to machine and ai translations shoved into legacy fixed-position caption formats

none of the books in this shot are actually in english, this is some of the best fansub typesetting work i've ever seen

obviously our all-consuming, late-capitalist hellscape would never approve. but the azure-ai-nightmare-cloud will continue to print money faster than anyone can count. so, they could just decide to anyway. or, at least, they could let people keep their jobs. they could just decide to do that.

we know microsoft can eat insane losses with xbox and feel nothing. so, what if they leaned into it!? you've got tech, software, infrastructure, hardware - go make big, weird things! maybe you'll catch lightning! maybe you'll find *the future of gaming*?! fuck, idk it doesn't have to be like this!

screaming this at all of the people who are actively trying to throw away my years' worth of highly-specific purpose-built deterministic automation flows in favor of the all-consuming black box money sink theft engine that is objectively worse in every way what a surprise, they aren't listening

also can we really call it "automation" if you have a task that is being done by mailing the data over to a remote server and running a stochastic process on someone else's GPUs, paying for it as a metered service, to invent how to do it from first principles every time

yeah, absolutely not! looking out for each other to me means supporting each other in whatever we're doing, respecting and appreciating criticism and writing in whatever shape it takes - even if it feels bad. it's part of the deal!

020

corey marra @coribald.com · 18/09/2026

been really surprised at how much i'm seeing some pretty old-fashioned dev v critic discourse around this game, even on this site considering how badly games writing has been decimated, and how much the whole games industry is in survival mode, i wish we'd just look out for each other

Over at @aftermath.site today, I'm talking Trails, side quests community service, policing, and finding inspiration in art. I don't necessarily think art or games can change the world but they show us better possibilities. They help us imagine. So! Anyone want to start a Bracer's Guild?

makes me feel insane that not only do we not talk about the human cost of our post-9/11 wars, we've barely even done the work to characterize it. the best we've got is "uh, probably millions?" meanwhile every year the refrain is still "never forget". god forbid you direct that thought over there
