I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.

Even if we put that aside, the issue is automation, scale, asymmetry of burden of scale. "Slop" is a critique of more than the experience of consuming the content. It's a description of the politics and power of the content's production, even when used casually.

This is not what slop refers to. I'm not being purely academic about this. The conflation does matter. Because this is a type of conglation that people do to make any reasonable critique of "A.I." seem overwrought. "Oh they said the same thing about the internet!" And it is not true.

I'm grateful I left tech in time to not be forced to use AI coding tools. (Actually, that was partly why I quit my job last year when I did. The other reason was that I wanted to work in libraries.) The price I paid instead was the mental turmoil of many months of library job search 🔥hell🔥 🤷
