New piece at iPolitics, with Adam Mongrain (@adammongrain.bsky.social) of More and Better Housing. Canada joining the EU as an "Associate Member" could lower the cost of building a home in Canada while opening new export markets. Read here:

Canada wants more trade with Europe. Start with housing
A well-crafted deal with the EU could also lower the cost of building a home in Canada, while opening new markets for suppliers and manufacturers of construction materials.

The more I've learned about how US building codes work, the more scandalized I've become. It almost makes zoning look good! Our codes, which are owned by a private entity, are updated constantly, with almost no research or cost-benefit analysis... www.housingwire.com/articles/mod...

The author urges evidence and cost analysis for model code changes, plus longer timelines so cities can evaluate how provisions work in practice.

An even more egregious example of a Chicago bldg that screams for single-stair. It’s even arranged the same way (4 units/floor) but with nowhere near the efficiency. A 8.6k sq. ft. floorplate (!!, a quadruple lot plat!) nets out only 16 units in a 5 story bldg. chicagoyimby.com/2026/07/mixe...

Vancouver's new single stair building code + "Villages" Zoning Updates = Unlocking small lot apartment buildings* *for the first time since the mid 70s, when the city was down-zoned to protect 'single family character', and apartment buildings were made illegal on 80% of the residential land

Vancouver, WA is proof that US bldg officials are empowered to permit single-stair bldgs right now if they wanted to. Staff posted on the city website that plans compliant with Seattle code are pre-approved. No need to wait for the state code to adopt or city council to vote. They just went for it.

Stockholm’s pedestrian fatality rate per 100k is 0.45. The U.S. is over 5x that. Like much of the EU Stockholm uses standards of 9.8’ for city street lanes and allows for 10.8’ in bus and truck corridors. The U.S. sets a 26’ minimum width for streets and common lane widths are 12-14’.

After the Grenfell fire, England changed its building codes to cap single-stair buildings at just 18 meters (or ~60 ft) high. Their own regulatory cost analysis found that if they capped it at 30m instead, it would achieve 90% of the benefits while cutting the overall societal cost by almost half.

Correct, it’s offering redundancy. However the probability of corridors serving 10-20 homes per floor being blocked in a large two stair building is way higher than the probability of the single exit stair being blocked in a small building with 20 homes total (max 4 per storey). Hence much safer.

Single-stair gets the New York Times treatment. @holz-bau.bsky.social reminds us why they call the last line the kicker: www.nytimes.com/2026/03/04/b... (gift link)
Mr. Eliason, who advocates allowing single-stair construction for small multifamily buildings as a solution to the housing crisis, said he learned how common the design was outside the United States while working in Germany in 2019.

After seeing an 11-story tower his firm at the time had designed, Mr. Eliason recalled, he turned to his boss and said: "Something is wrong here. Where's your other stair?"

"He's looking at me, and said: 'What are you talking about? If there was another stair, there wouldn't be any room for the homes'"

But none of them at 4-6 storeys are sprinklered. Wood (behind 1-hr gypsum) +sprinklers is safer for egress than concrete/masonry without sprinklers.

Vancouver stair width is not increased, Vancouver Building By-Law is 1100mm. The city has it’s own code. Only the British Columbia provincial code is 1500mm, though there is no technical basis to support the width given the extremely low occupant load.

For context, the $150,000 is is in reference to high buildings (at 25 storeys, this would be $6,000 per storey annually, or $500 monthly), at 200 sq.ft per storey in floor area savings, this is $2 net rent (back in 2008). Adjust for today’s rents and applicable building height to do today’s math.
