I keep looking on goodreads for considered and earnest negative reviews of books I'm still processing and thinking about but instead finding reviews that were apparently written by people outclassed by anything more complex than Green Eggs and Ham but who blame that on the author

Very funny of the Lanterns show to have Hal Jordan, the first human Green Lantern who has been succeeded by...6? 7? more characters as "the" Green Lantern but who nevertheless is still slingin that ring, spit out "you'll never replace me" and be so bitter about it

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

He pictured Ginger, back on the beach. I want to be the most famous person in the whole world. Perhaps that was something new, come to think of it. Not ambition for gold, or power, or land or all the things that were familiar parts of the human world. Just ambition to be yourself, as big as possible. Not ambition for, but to be.

“You’ll accept the food?”
“We are a proud country.”
“What are you proud of?”
It came swiftly, like a blow, and Polly realized how wars happened. You took that shock that had run through her, and let it boil.

stripping OMB of the ability to dole out grants is an enormous win, this nukes the SAVE act, it prohibits further ICE bailouts, adding a "no, really, trump can't break already on-the-books laws regarding elections the federal government doesn't run" clause would be both unnecessary and unproductive

Terry Pratchett coming up with the character of Granny Weatherwax is one of the all time triumphs of writing, a nearly untouchable success. And then he did it AGAIN with Tiffany Aching

ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT
A bluesky tweet from someone whose handle is scribbled out, saying "Dirtbag Terry Pratchett" might be a good way to describe the Dungeon Crawler Carl books. This is a deep falsehood.

Sometimes books are hundreds and hundreds of pages because the author didn't know what to cut and sometimes books are 80% too short because the author couldn't wait to get to "the good stuff"

If I could wish one single book into existence, it would be a post-covid Tiffany Aching novel. Community and responsibility are so important in those books and I would have dearly loved seeing the pandemic experience processed through Tiffany.

Saw a lot of headlines saying "wikipedia is embracing ai" being tossed around tabloids, and I'm pretty sure they were maliciously written to make you feel a certain way about Wikipedia. What's actually happening is that wikipedia is demanding payment for data scraping and the corpos don't like that.

This is such a misunderstanding of why writers, artists, and designers do research to begin with, which is to find something unexpected, not capture the average or find reference for the default. And, as always, the biggest misapprehension: We don’t want to NOT do this part. It’s fun to learn shit

I would love to watch a trailer for an animated adaptation of Hyperion. Doesn't even need to be a full film, just a trailer of some old 1970s Metal Hurlant-style sci-fi art. Don't even need to see the Shrike.

this is pretty solid spiritual advice tbh “Be prudent, be wise, be careful that your use of AI does not limit your true human growth. Use it in such a way that if it disappeared tomorrow, you would still know how to think, how to create, how to act on your own, how to form authentic friendships.”
