I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

Reflecting on the president's horrific gaffe today, I haven't seen much discussion on the difference between a "surprise attack" and a "sneak attack." It's an important distinction. A surprise attack happens when one combatant attacks another in an unexpected time or place. It's strategy. 1/

To be clear: the SAVE Act does not simply require the identification voting ALREADY requires. It demands proof of CITIZENSHIP— a birth certificate with a name that matches yours now (bye, bye, married women), or a passport— both of which are expensive and take a long time to obtain.

I’ve worked with technology for over 40 years, and the most important lesson I can impart to you is that nobody ever accurately predicts the impact of a new technology, ESPECIALLY the companies introducing it. Anyone who confidently tells you how AI will change things is deluded.

I believe a lot of people on here haven't a clue how U.S. Gov't works. If your political party does not hold the House th Senate or the Presidency you have no political power at all. In regard to the debate about the training of ICE/CBP agents, I have an aphorism for you: "Culture eats training for breakfast." Individual behavior is mainly a product of organizational culture, which will negate prior training. ICE/CPB have well documented toxic cultures. THAT is the problem.

Quick reminder the even if the 25th Amendment were invoked, the president can dispute it and is immediately reinstated. If the Cabinet invokes it again, Congress votes to resolve the conflict, and it takes 2/3 in both houses to remove. It’s a higher threshold than impeachment. 1/2

What I think people fail to understand is that shutting down the government is a hostagetaking situation. And hostagetaking scenarios only work if the other party cares about the hostages. The reality is the Democrats have limited leverage because the Republicans don’t give a damn.

The stark moral asymmetry of the shutdown fight is that Democrats care about the harms it causes and Republicans don’t. Republicans understand this, and it’s why they are intentionally increasing the harms. They don’t risk electoral consequences for 12 months, which in politics is forever.
