Like I think that more right-wingers would benefit from making an effort to "reach across the aisle" to their liberal coworker than vice versa. Liberal coworker likely grew up with some right-wingers in their family or community and consciously rejected that. But a lot of righties are isolated!

But all these strategies about "overcoming ideological bias" always seem to be deployed solely at liberals/leftists, which is ironic as they are far more likely to be acquainted with right-wing ideas (and that's often why we've moved to places / chosen professions w / fewer of them) than the reverse

because I don't want my students to think i'm telling them what to think no matter which way they tilt. But where I have a lot of stuff about my political opinions, it's extremely deliberate. As you said, works great for detering people I don't want to talk to to begin with!

Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yeah I've had people act like I don't think about that stuff but it's very deliberate - as you said, partly as a filtering device (also the people who ARE cool are drawn by it). I've also lived and in red areas where you have to be more careful, and since I work as a prof I'm careful on school stuff

a *moderate* treatment for ideological bias is to clean a river with someone, or another shared point of interest to focus on, and demystify how your differing beliefs could bring you to this shared interest but the *best* cure is to storm Normandy Beach

Also you probably know more but IME, most subtitles don't include anything about non-language audio (like sound effects, instrumental music) so it doesn't seem like it would replace the utility of closed captioning for people who are deaf/HOH

My issue is less that I think loans are the best way to fund this (believe me as someone with a lot, I do not) and more removing any means by which non-rich students are able to major in arts and humanities fields at all

Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The emojis around the mention of my profession seemed pretty snotty, and excessive when “I don’t like that the job I have that I enjoy is under threat” is not exactly an unusual position Anyway we don’t seem to be in disagreement, but also the Trump admin is not replacing this with grants

Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I would also obviously prefer if it isn’t stuff they have to pay off forever as someone currently doing that with my loans, but something is better than nothing in not blocking non-rich students from being able to choose what to study
001
Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
My profession is that I am a music professor and I would like to have students who major in it to take my classes. I mean if you want to be snotty about it ok, but fewer majors will mean fewer professors hired, and fewer arts classes is good for no one

Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
not that the Trump admin cares about this (until the courts / the eventual Dem Congress makes him), but pretty sure this is also an ADA violation??

Thanks to Trump's supposed limitations on what kids getting student loans can study, my desire for Dems to sweep this midterms like a floor has intensified, in the sense of "I would like my profession to continue to exist" Plus, restricting them to rich kids is the death knell of the arts!

Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
as someone who majored in (and now teaches in a university) something that Trump apparently thinks working-class kids shouldn't be able to study, feeling this. there's a lot of stuff the upper classes love the idea of the lower classes doing that they'd never dream of for their own kids! telling!

there's more than a hint of 'noble savage' in the way people outside the trades talk about those jobs and especially those workers. there's a reason people leave those jobs for less physically demanding ones if the option becomes available! enough salt-of-the-earth rhapsodizing!

Awful: The Supreme Court just let Trump's third-country deportations move forward. Still a shot at stopping them later but unlikely. Reminder: If Dems win power, they can and should defund both the white-nationalist Office of Remigration and third-country deportations, as I argue in this piece:

Lots of fascinating observations in this piece. A key one is that those demanding calculated moderation on trans rights are not acknowledging where the logic *or* the politics of that position actually lead, which is to a terrible place:

There's a tendency for the v real and important need for broader LGBTQ+ solidarity to turn into people co-opting specific struggles they largely don't face because people who do are "also queer" & as a cis lesbian I see a LOT of that from fellow AFAB queers re: gay/bi men's and trans women's issues
140
Dr. Rose Bridges (she/her or they/them) @composerose.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
that's part of it, but I think some of it is also understanding the nuances and divides within the queer community, particularly the historical one between predominantly AMAB and AFAB people. primary HIV-AIDS victims have been gay/bi men (mostly AMAB) and trans women; most "zero covid" are AFAB
