Road-tested my newest handknit hat yesterday & it was a champ in the biting wind, kept my head hella toasty, & I even got a compliment from a young person!! No pics but I fixed that. I’m calling it Flaming Head on a Stick, & there’s 2 ways to wear it: Normie Mode & Gnome Mode. #MeMadeMonday 🧶

The hat is knit with handspun yarn, also by me: Colorbomb Creations Menage á Trois in ‘Flambe’. It’s a 3ply Aran weight, chain-plyed to maximize striping of the fiery reds, oranges, golds, and purples. The hat is embellished with handspun wool locks plied with thread by filofee.

The hat is a Nisselue style stocking cap of my own design: knit in stockinette stitch in a long cone-shape that ends with i-cord tied in an overhand knot. In this photo I’m wearing it in Normie Mode: the weight of the crown causing the top to fold over atop my head, i-cord curlicue dangling down near my ear.

Same hat, worn in Gnome Mode: the crown is supported by a removable cone inside, extending the cone to its full height of approximately 14” from edge of brim to point where the i-cord curlicue flops over and dangles about 4 additional inches.

Prey-go-neesh (California condors) help ecosystems by consuming animal carcasses, preventing the spread of diseases. This also benefits sey-gey-po-lah (prairies) and hoo-leyhl-ke-loy (insects) by releasing nutrients back into the environment.
Since March 2022, Prey-go-neesh have returned to the keehl (redwood) forests of Northern California-part of their ancestral range. Their reintroduction is the result of a decades-long, Yurok-led effort, carried forward in partnership with the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other partners. This return is not only a milestone in wildlife recovery but also a powerful continuation of Indigenous stewardship, cultural revitalization, and the responsibility to restore balance to the land.

The Yurok Tribe is one of many indigenous cultures that considers condors sacred. California condors, or prey-go-neesh in Yurok, have been spiritually tied to the Yurok Hlkelonah — the cultural and ecological landscape — since the beginning of the world. Condors feature prominently in the Tribe’s origin narrative, and its feathers and songs are foundational components of Yurok World Renewal ceremonies. Management and conservation of condors in Yurok Ancestral Territory and the Pacific Northwest is part of the Yurok Tribe’s obligation to restore balance to the world. YCRP seeks to return the condor to the integral role it plays in healthy ecosystems and, in doing so, to renew and strengthen the spiritual lifeways of the many tribes who revere this majestic species.
