Ichogaeshi - Inverted Maidenhair Leaf Hairstyle 1910s. ‘The [geisha’s] ancient styles of the coiffure are fast disappearing, their place being usurped by the Ichōgaeshi and even the sokuhatsu (European style).’ S). Text and image via Blue Ruin 1 on Flickr
Captured in a stark monochrome studio portrait from behind, the sculpted silhouette of the Ichōgaeshi (inverted maidenhair-leaf) coiffure reveals the remarkable geometry of early 20th-century Japanese hairdressing. Twin symmetrical loops of lustrous black hair arch gracefully at the crown, gathered tightly in the center and anchored by a slender, pale hairpin (kanzashi). Below, the hair sweeps down into a smooth, disciplined nape section (tabo), highlighting the bare back of the neck as it meets a dark silk collar decorated with crisp, white resist-dyed dots (shibori). The image evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the delicate aroma of camellia oil and fragrant wax (bintsuke-abura) smoothing every strand, the cool sheen of polished hair under soft light, the tactile contrast of crinkled silk crepe, and the quiet, motionless poise required during the traditional dressing ritual.
opularized during the late Edo period and reaching widespread favor in the Meiji and Taisho eras (1910s), the Ichōgaeshi (literally "turned-over ginkgo leaf") derived its name from the loops' resemblance to the fan-shaped leaf of the maidenhair tree. As Japan modernized, this versatile style became a preferred choice among geisha, young townswomen, and fashionable urbanites because it could be styled entirely from a woman’s natural hair without heavy hairpieces (kamiji). Occupying a key transition point in Japanese dress history, the Ichōgaeshi bridged the gap between elaborate classical nihongami coiffures and the emerging, Western-inspired sokuhatsu hairstyles. Crafting such precise, architectural forms demanded specialized artisans (kamiyui) equipped with fine-toothed boxwood combs (tsuge-gushi) and heated irons, demonstrating the meticulous monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material skill) embedded within traditional grooming arts.

My son works at the local museum in Wigan & was going through some of the comment/feedback cards after a colleague had done a school workshop with 6y olds. One of the questions was what do you like about living in Wigan? Usual replies…rugby team, parks, friends etc. But one read “There is no war” 😔

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Hoshi-wajo standing wooden statue. 11th century, Japan. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction
Carved from a single block of timber, a monk standing in solemn monastic robes reveals a miraculous inner metamorphosis through a deep vertical cleft down the center of his head and face. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction, and his left hand, holding a slender ritual water vase (suibin), the figure exudes a quiet, poised presence. The aged surface of the sculpture is etched with deep vertical wood grain, tool marks, and age-worn fissures that catch dramatic, directional light, capturing the physical tension between the outer human countenance and the divine radiance hidden within.
Dating to 11th-century Heian-period Japan, this extraordinary wooden sculpture depicts Hōshō Wajō (the Chinese monk Baozhi, 418–514 CE), a renowned Buddhist master of the Southern Liang Dynasty celebrated for his eccentric wisdom and miraculous deeds. According to Japanese Buddhist folklore recorded in collections such as the Konjaku Monogatarishū, when Emperor Wu of Liang sent court painters to capture the monk's portrait, Baozhi used his fingers to rend open the skin of his face, revealing the Eleven-Headed Guanyin (Jūichimen Kannon) beneath to demonstrate that true Buddhahood cannot be captured by superficial physical likeness. Sculpted in the ichiboku-zukuri (single-block wood carving) technique, this work represents a pinnacle of Japanese religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating a literary legend of spiritual transfiguration into a startling, physical masterpiece of sacred art.

Poling Upriver against the Wind (detail) 舟行人物図Formerly attributed to: Shutoku 18th–19th century MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink on paper DIMENSIONS28.1 x 44.7 cm (11 1/16 x 17 5/8 in.) (height x width) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
Hunched low against the fury of a headwind, a solitary boatman straining against his pole (sao) drives a slender skiff through turbulence and mist. The figure is rendered in dark, explosive ink marks that capture the bristling texture of a coarse straw raincoat (mino), his face buried deep within his clothing as he leans his full body weight into the task. Above him, razor-sharp, sweeping strokes of black ink slash diagonally across the upper field, depicting reeds or branches whipped flat by a sudden gale. The boat itself is constructed with a few swift, wet calligraphic strokes, floating atop a pale, unadorned wash that evokes the chill, boundless expanse of a stormy river.
Formerly attributed to the painter Shutoku and dating from the 18th to 19th century, this hanging scroll (suibokuga) belongs to the lineage of Zen-inspired landscape and figure painting (sanzui jinbutsu-ga). The motif of the solitary boatman struggling against natural elements draws upon a deep classical heritage in East Asian art, where the humble fisherman or ferryman serves as an allegory for the human soul navigating the tempestuous currents of existence. Collected by Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow—one of the pioneering American patrons who helped preserve Japanese cultural heritage during the rapid modernization of the Meiji period—the work demonstrates the extraordinary economy of brushwork (gatai) characteristic of Japanese ink monozukuri (artisanal mastery). With astonishing brevity, the artist compresses motion, atmosphere, and raw physical exertion into a tiny, concentrated fraction of the paper surface.
