I plan to keep doing this work; to push the boundaries of visual storytelling and finding new ways to make complex information clear, engaging, and human. If your organization is expanding or investing in visual storytelling, cartography, or graphics, I would love to chat about opportunities.

As someone who has spent far too much time grieving and who works in tech, I'm going to level with you: The human brain isn't equipped to handle this. Grief means learning that person is gone. Digital interaction feels real to us. This sends mixed signals. Which one wins?

I'll also add it reduces the opportunities for any life-saving/changing acts of compassion. I paid cash for my first degree because I couldn't navigate financial aid. Many times, I ate one meal a day. Sometimes, someone's compassion saved me that day.

Additional note to companies rolling out AI as the first line. When you attempt to label AI as "human help" eventually all your customers learn to treat real people like crap. Label your AI appropriately.

The medium is the message. You're on your device, performing intimacy in so many ways - comforting a friend thru chat, supporting others by elevating their posts, and even providing care by telling others your working hours aren't theirs. But what if those people aren't real? 📊 🧵

And this is why users ask for the data. 📊 Because in 2020, stimulus checks were mailed. Rather than spend in uncertain times, more Americans banked the money. Why are less saving now? How many are unemployed and burned through savings? How many just don't have the extra to save? ...and so on.

It’s worth naming that the reason people already have these “neutral” alternative phrases in their back pocket is because this is the language white supremacist scholars use to hide their hateful work. And now they’re asking all of us to use it to legitimize them.

Oatmeal artfully set in a rice bowl. It's yellow hued from the saffron, a bit thick, and topped with unroasted hand crushed pistachios.

Career highlight: @jburnmurdoch.ft.com showcases my paper collaboration during his webinar. Some behind the scenes notes: We originally went into this paper to see if we could overtax and "over-text" the audience. At least with line charts and what we designed, we did not hit that limit. 📊
John Burn-Murdoch presents the research paper I collaborated on. The paper, Striking a Balance: Reader Takeaways and Preferences when integrating text and charts, fills his screen while a small capture of him floats at the top. Group chat fills the side. Authors of the paper are Chase Stokes, Vidya Setlur, Bridget Cogley (me), Arvind Satyanrayan, and Marti Hearst. The graphic on the paper showcases the same line chart with increasing levels of text and an all text variant.

Black text on a beige background. The title reads: "Things to Keep In Mind."

The body text reads: "Have patience but also persistence. The organizers may not get back to you right away. Take advantage of opportunities that are already curated (like trainings, sign ups). Just keep showing up with an open mind.

The work you wanna do may not be exactly what’s most helpful at the given moment. Be flexible and open and humble. Be aware of not increasing the workload of those already handling 100 things.

And remember that there is a lot of work that is NOT glamorous. There is so much administrative, caretaking, behind the scenes, or otherwise de-valued or not high-profile work that is sooo critical now and always!"
