I used to lived in Bristol and there was rows of terraced houses including mine, with wheelie bins outside the front door on the street, permanently. Eyesore, blocked footpath and absolutely stank in summer

what's their strategy with this line do you think? it's kind of a Trump-esque play, 100% no-holds-barred BS. Reduce the whole issue to mud-slinging, so truth becomes subjective But ultimately how is this going to save them? Whip up fan anger?

beyond the weird catholics-arent-Christians implication here, I take exception to the whole invoking of religion at all for this point. Aren't atheists capable of 'acting for the greater good' too?

Just to fully underline how spiteful this shit is for those unaware: On the left is the route the Orange Order have been ordered to take for the past 3 decades without trouble. On the right is the route that has brought hundreds of cops to Drumcree. The only motivation is sectarian antagonism.

I understand people are passionate about Irish military neutrality but it's a very conplicated issue imo and hard to get your head around whats right. I definitely don't have the answers but when I try to discuss (trying to be polite), blanket blocking feels harsh

But Ireland isn't militarily neutral in practice?
Supporting Ukraine financially, supporting aid in Gaza.
Both of which I'm 100% behind.
There's a lot of bad actors in the world now and we are rightly taking sides. What else are we going to do, roll over and let them take what they want?

OpenAI is well known for hiring only 'true AGI believers' as developers. So ok to ignore what they say. Personally I think the AI-as-a-hacking-tool-for-humans is the biggest risk, and main reason it should be regulated. But reason CEOs want regs now is old n simple market protectionism

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Really enjoying the recent rest is history series on the troubles, I thought I knew a fair bit but didn't realise I was missing a lot of context, however the big issue is my brain struggling to process the way Dominic Sandbrook pronounces 'protestants' with a hard first t.

A significant contributor to the gender pay gap and the continuing financial disparity between men and women is the undervaluing of all of the unpaid care work done by women in Ireland. Women all over Ireland get up early, every morning, and go to work, unpaid and unvalued.

Britain’s original plan for New Zealand had the islands split into three provinces, with nonsensical borders typical of any British colonial project. The provinces were named after Irish ones (the guy who came up with them was an Anglo-Irish colonial officer). These didn’t last for long.
A map of New Zealand, showing its provincial divisions in 1841. Most of the North Island forms ‘New Ulster’, but the southern tip of the island forms ‘New Munster along with what today is now known as the Southern Island. The small island below the Southern Island, Rakiura/Stewart Island, makes the third province ‘New Leinster’

Having described Dublin's Wax Museum as featuring "Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown spitting a jet of water from her mouth while farting on a toilet", I worry this might lead you to presume this was a delightfully heightened bit of absurdism on my part. Dear reader, this is not the case.
