Which makes it more nefarious, not less.

A fundamental misunderstanding here - "receivership" in the academic sense doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the unit's financial management or resources. "Receivership" means that they aren't trusted to manage themselves, so someone from the outside is brought in.

If memory serves, the Federal apology (delivered by the PM of the time) was mandated by the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. I don't know how much of it was scripted by the agreement itself.

My colleague Stuart Macdonald's reflection on the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. An important point he makes - the churches reflected the values of the culture because they thought the culture was Christian. Because the culture was racist, so were the churches. An ourobouros of sin.

This reinforces for me the importance of Zech 14 in either prescribing and/or describing the role of Sukkot in the Hellenistic period - King Yhwh.

What's happening in Alberta is even more batshit than I ever thought. Danielle Smith is a dangerous psychopath, and the AB separatist movement largely exists because COVID broke far-right brains, and is led by Christo-fascist religious white nationalists, relying on dark money. 2/n

In late July, I started working on a feature trying to figure out where Canadians’ heads were at. Then came another Trumpquake, and a late-breaking story that changed everything. Gift link: www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/9bc9b25...

Went on a tour of the EU parliament in Brussels this summer. Guide asked everyone where they were from (English language tour). Sweden, Spain, Ireland, Croatia, etc... and us. Husband said, "Canada, and we want to join." Much chuckling and guide said, that's not possible. Who's laughing now?

Sometimes it's more nuanced than that - the uni may be signalling that it won't fill your position but reallocate it. Replace a Chaucer scholar with a Caribbean lit specialist, say. That can be hard for someone to know - that the field they devoted their life to isn't going to be sustained.

This may be an issue specific to Canada (viz. end of mandatory retirement in the early 2000s), but worth your time even if you're not a Canadian academic.

Beyond everything else, this is a great point. I've always brought librarians in to my courses to teach library research skills. I've sent students to writing centres to improve writing skills. If GenAI becomes "plug and play" as in the OP, it wouldn't be my job to teach it.

So, just as we don't teach "using a word processor" in courses, why would we teach "AI skills"?

Most intersections in residential neighbourhoods in Saskatoon (where I lived for 20 years) are so-called "courtesy corners," where there's no signage at all. Everyone's got to work it out.
