My colleague Stuart Macdonald's reflection on the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. An important point he makes - the churches reflected the values of the culture because they thought the culture was Christian. Because the culture was racist, so were the churches. An ourobouros of sin.

What's happening in Alberta is even more batshit than I ever thought. Danielle Smith is a dangerous psychopath, and the AB separatist movement largely exists because COVID broke far-right brains, and is led by Christo-fascist religious white nationalists, relying on dark money. 2/n

In late July, I started working on a feature trying to figure out where Canadians’ heads were at. Then came another Trumpquake, and a late-breaking story that changed everything. Gift link: www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/9bc9b25...

Went on a tour of the EU parliament in Brussels this summer. Guide asked everyone where they were from (English language tour). Sweden, Spain, Ireland, Croatia, etc... and us. Husband said, "Canada, and we want to join." Much chuckling and guide said, that's not possible. Who's laughing now?

This may be an issue specific to Canada (viz. end of mandatory retirement in the early 2000s), but worth your time even if you're not a Canadian academic.

Beyond everything else, this is a great point. I've always brought librarians in to my courses to teach library research skills. I've sent students to writing centres to improve writing skills. If GenAI becomes "plug and play" as in the OP, it wouldn't be my job to teach it.

What are they fighting for? More expensive cans of Coke? Higher grocery bills?

In Amsterdam for the first time since 2017. And, shockingly, if you live in Toronto like I do, there are pedestrianized streets with not a cop in sight to "provide security" & extort gobs of money from the city. Instead there are retractable bollards. Pretty sure bollards are cheaper than cops.

Investments in public art are never just aesthetic. Where public art is placed is as important as the public art itself. Whether explicitly or implicitly, the placement of public art communicates who municipalities (& their stakeholders) consider deserving of beauty and public joy.
