Reading through these essays, I was struck by something I had not realized before about Knoppers’s work: his style of argumentation. He almost never made a clear thesis statement or a concise articulation of his argument. A statement of the topic, yes; a statement of how the essay was structured, yes. His was an inductive style of scholarship: a review of previous positions on the topic, an amassing and analysis of the data, a weighing of the evidence, all leading to judicious conclusions. The conclusions so arrived at seem almost commonsense, they are so obvious. This inductive style of scholarship is related to the character of the man who created it: careful, thoughtful, irenic. The reader must go on the same journey with him through the evidence; there are no shortcuts to reaching the conclusions.

Looking forward to presenting, even though it's in the dreaded Tuesday morning slot. I'm talking about translation theory and translating Chronicles. #SBLAAR

Over the weekend, the encampment at UofT King's College Circle has grown, and they've done some redecoration. Taken from the steps of the building where I work. There was a drumming circle going on this morning and looked like maybe a sweat as well.
Large green lawn with more tents than previously. Temporary fencing covered with tarps in places. Banners, signs, etc. festooning.

A few more tents this morning at UofT King's College Circle but a lot fewer people. Three media cameras set up facing the entrance to the encampment on the north-east side. Taken from the entrance to the building where I work, which is on the west side.
Tents set up inside a large lawn surrounded by temporary fencing.

Protest encampment in King's College Circle at UofT at 9 am. Taken from the entrance to the building where I work. Fence was put up Monday "in advance of Convocation" which is a month away. I walked by the breach in the fence this morning where protesters were being interviewed by media.
Protest encampment - many tents on a broad open lawn surrounded by temporary fencing.

The comms people at my institution did up this poster for my new course in the winter - I'm excited!
Gender & Power in the book of Judges: Interested in questions of gender, sexuality, embodiment, and power in the Hebrew Bible? In this course we'll explore these epistemological and methodological questions - using the book of Judges as a case study. Students will learn various theoretical approaches such as feminist, womanist, masculinity studies, and queer theory.
