As cooling demand rises across tropical coastal cities, non-evaporative district cooling could ease pressure on both water supplies and electricity grids. A Puerto Rico case study found cooling costs cut by 52–90%, with seawater cooling eliminating water use. 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s44...

‘Planetary boundaries’ necessary for flourishing of life have been massively breached, scientists warn
New report shows key indicators of Earth’s health are ‘outside the safe operating space’ as climate disaster looms The planetary life support systems relied upon by humans have deteriorated to their worst levels ever recorded amid ongoing pollution and habitat destruction, according to a key yet grim annual update by scientists. Of the nine “planetary boundaries” that help determine whether life can flourish on Earth, seven are being breached at their highest ever levels of transgression, according to the latest planetary health check, a process that was established in 2009. This is not a crisis we wait out. It is the new weather. What is your community doing about heat, and what should the rest of us be doing? #ExtremeHeat #Climate #PublicHealth #ClimateJustice

Aradhna Tree Party @clumpedisotopes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Heat is not an individual burden for an isolated pensioner or a farmworker to carry. It is a political crisis, and it demands political action. Communities are first to feel the impacts and last to get the funding.

Aradhna Tree Party @clumpedisotopes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Communities are rising to this before funding arrives. That is community power, and it is where my climate hope comes from. When the people closest to the problem are resourced to lead, the ceiling one generation hits becomes the floor for the next.

Good ideas should travel. No community should spend years reinventing what a neighbor has learned. And it is not only mayors. In South LA we are building toward this with Esperanza Community Housing, training promotoras, community health workers, in climate and heat.

I have seen this at ground level. Almost a decade ago my students walked LA neighborhoods in heat waves with sensors and an infrared camera. One wrote her feet were burning through her sneakers on the asphalt. 20 feet from a tree-shaded building to an unshaded bus stop, it was 10F (5.5C) hotter.

Aradhna Tree Party @clumpedisotopes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
A map of who dies in a heat wave is a map of past decisions about who mattered. Adapting to heat is a chance to redraw that map.

Aradhna Tree Party @clumpedisotopes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
None of this is an accident. In the 1930s, federal maps marked Black, Latino and immigrant neighborhoods as "hazardous" for lending. Those redlined neighborhoods got the freeways and parking lots, not the parks. Today they have less tree canopy and run several degrees hotter.

Aradhna Tree Party @clumpedisotopes.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Here's the thing - heat is the deadliest climate hazard, ~0.5 million lives a year, and it is not evenly distributed. In LA that is South LA, Watts, the eastern San Fernando Valley. Across CA it is farmworker communities from Oxnard to the Coachella and Imperial Valleys, where highs pass 110F (43C).

Paris has 1,400 cool spots, so everyone is a 7 minute walk from one, plus 27,000 climate volunteers checking on neighbors. Milan is turning squares and school streets into shaded green space, with a binding target to hold local warming to 2C (3.6F) by 2050.
