Photo of Cllr Claire Miller with a quote that reads, "I'm delighted that my motion was agreed today so that the council can take steps to collect all overdue non-domestic rates.
The scale of the problem of phoenixing, (closing down companies leaving debts unpaid), and non payment of rates in the capital is outrageous. I’m sure that law-abiding, tax-paying businesses around Edinburgh will be appalled at the unfairness."

🚗 Incredible that 40% of blocked gullies in the area are not being cleared because of a parked car, surely there must be solutions to that ⌚ No ability to give timescales for the repair of blocked gullies - in my experience of reporting, even straight forward cases can be over a year

⛈️ After the extreme rain and consequent flooding in the Old Town during the festivals I've asked about gullies. While I know gullies are not the only thing needing fixed, there are some *interesting* findings to follow up... ⌚🚗
Question no 18
By Councillor Miller for answer by
the Convener of the Transport and
Environment Committee at a meeting
of the Council on 17 September 2026
On Wednesday 19/08/26 the Old Town was hit with extreme
rain which led to flash floods, causing disruption and
damage to the festivals, local businesses and residents.
While it is known that gullies do not currently have capacity
to drain all rainfall during extreme rain events, there are
concerns that gullies are not fully maintained. Within the Old Town area of Edinburgh there are 1,129
gullies. Currently 844 of these gullies are cleaned and
working (75%) and 285 requiring maintenance. The table
below provides detail on the required maintenance.

Brander Jammed 34
Early / Weekend Work Required 15
Full of Tar / Concrete 5
Gully Investigation Required 18
Hand Clean Required 21
High Pressure Jet Required 15
No Access - Other 13
No Access - Roadworks 31
No Gully Found 14
Not Visited 2
Parked Car 116

Grand Total 285Question
Please provide the mean and median time to resolve reports
of blocked gullies in the affected area
Answer
As these gullies require a variety of maintenance it is not
possible to provide accurate timelines on repair. Question
Please provide the frequency of routine gully checking and
maintenance in the affected area
Answer
Routine gully cleaning is carried out biannually unless on a
sensitive route which are cleaned every 6 months. 25 gullies
in this area are sensitive.

I expect Jack et al will have been notified about any changes that are proposed to the stops on the north side of the street, you are right that the boundary cuts along the road.
110
Cllr Claire Miller (she/her) @cllrcmiller.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I think the plans shows that one stop will be removed, and the remaining one will be much closer to half-way along the road. It sounds sensible but I just want to make sure it gets out there, and therefore anyone likely to be affected has a chance to speak up.
010
Cllr Claire Miller (she/her) @cllrcmiller.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Yes, it's such a different story for people who aren't able to walk terribly far for whatever reason, so it's really important to think about it from their point of view
010
Cllr Claire Miller (she/her) @cllrcmiller.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Yep, that's the plan. And yes my first reaction is to think this seems reasonable. But in some other places there have been real problems with the distance to bus stops for users, so I'm hoping to find out about any issues now while there's still time to change designs!

The council is consulting on whether to grant access to vehicles to the rear of Greenside Church and house, as this is common good land. While this is a bit of a niche issue I'm sure there will be some who would want to feed in their views consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/cg/greenside/
A map shows the Greenside Church and house with a red boundary line, and a green outlined and shaded area to indicate the vehicular access that is proposed across common good land.

At the other end of London Road there is a proposal to move the Brunswick Street bus stop closer to the pedestrian crossing which seems very sensible to me, it always seemed to me to be very close to the final stop at the end of London Road.
Screen cap of a portion of a technical drawing. The map shows London Road and the junction with Hillside Crescent. The bus stop has been positioned near to the pedestrian crossing and there is a callout box which reads "Brunswick Street bus stop relocated closer to the safe pedestrian crossing point and better spaced to the adjacent bus stops".

Another case of bus stop rationalisation! This time my initial reaction is to think it's maybe OK, but I'd be grateful for feedback either way, and if there are any concerns I am happy to raise them.
Screen cap of a portion of a technical drawing. The map shows London Road and the side road of Hillside Crescent. A callout box says "Wellington Street bus stop and build-out removed to support bus flow and improve cycle lane continuity".Screen cap of a portion of a technical drawing. The map shows London Road and the junction with side road Brunton Terrace (although on the map it is named Burton Place which is presumably an error). There is a zoomed in section showing a bus stop with a build out. The call out label says "New pavement build-out that will provide more space around the busy inbound Brunton Place bus stop".

We would only organise to substitute if the members of the committee weren’t available for some reason, and who does it depends on who is the default sub for a subject and who is available. Very much not a fight. Sorry, very boring in comparison to your imagination.

It is completely dishonest of the government to use the legitimate concerns of job security and the cost of living to falsely justify new fossil fuel extraction. It’s time they side with the public, not oil and gas executives and their shareholders. Say NO to Jackdaw

It's me, I'm 'edinburgh cllrs'. I'll be proposing this motion at our next full council meeting. I'm deeply concerned by both investigations and whether businesses are paying their full non-domestic rates. I very much hope to get support from other councillors so that we can get clarity.

@spokes.org.uk I contacted council officers with my concerns about this when it was initially built and wanted to follow up to let you know the response I received.
Good morning

Can I please request that the northbound cycle lane along Forrest Road / Greyfriars Place / George IV Bridge, at the pavement build out which has been inserted at the Greyfriars Bobby statue, is urgently instated with lane defenders

Many thanks, ClaireIn relation to your request for lane defenders to be installed at the pavement build-out by the Greyfriars Bobby statue, a road safety audit was undertaken as part of the works. This identified the need to add additional signage. Although this was not initially in place, the contractor subsequently did install the signage. There was also re-lining undertaken to ensure that a full metre of carriageway was maintained.

Whilst we recognise the importance of scrutinising the measures in place, we are satisfied with the process followed and do not consider it necessary to change the current measure.
