I like both of them a lot too! But I can see why a protagonist doomed by their own flaws can be more jarring in a medium where you are not just asked but required to shoulder that character's persona and make decisions for them personally than in one where you just helplessly watch them spiral.

I think this is most evident in the general backlash to attempts to implement tragic heroes as video game protagonists. L.A. Noire and The Excavation of Hob's Barrow are 2 examples I can think of and in both cases the player reception was indignant and angry for (imo) understandable reasons.

I think it helps that Aika is so effusively enthusiastic about normal girl things in a way that is technically a joke in the meta sense but isn't constantly highlighted as risible/a character flaw, it stops her being the kind of cynical character who might get kind of tiresome.
