The physicist and astronomer Karl Schwarzschild was born #OTD in 1873. In 1915, while serving in the German army on the Russian front, he found the first exact (non-trivial) solution of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Among other things, it describes a non-rotating black hole. 🧪 ⚛️ 🔭

Too naïve on my part: I got explained that the Schwarzschild solution applies outside of spherical objects, but not inside, and that gravity within such bodies is weaker than outside (due to spherical shape). Anyway: thank you very much for what for me was a very helpful Schwarzschild-radius primer!

The problem here is that the speed of AI producing surprises, and the speed of human beings replacing standards (even with the very best AI assistance) are just orders of magnitude different. You only recover from a surprise like this if you do the preparation in advance.
