The Vietnam war showed the world that a large & well funded military isn’t enough to defeat a perceived enemy. When Saigon fell I knew that any country or organization would be able to best the U.S. in an armed conflict. Modern Presidents declare war to defend our military-industrial complex.

All that wealth owned by religion that thrives on the poor and the ignorant. My wife said she lost her “faith” while on a school field trip to Mexico City when she walked out of a magnificent church dripping in gold to be met by dozens of beggars. At age 14, she realized something wasn’t right.

One reason, perhaps. But also all of our grandkids didn’t drink or do street drugs because whatever was not cool in their group then they didn’t do. Yet a couple of their parents are serious recreational drinkers. Going to college and drinking because you’re an “adult” is also less of a thing.

Also, junior colleges. For a decade Santa Barbara City college was awash in foreign students. Why? Because they paid out-of-state tuition. It was the schools funding strategy that allowed Californians to attend for essentially free. There was community backlash primarily because of housing.

For the last 10 yrs of his career my uncle worked McDonald Douglas as part of their crash investigation team. They focused on mechanical and hydraulic failures. He claimed that everyone worked hard to keep pilot suicide findings kind of quiet.
