Unprecedented return migration from the US has contributed to Mexico's economic development in recent decades. In the March issue, by José R. Bucheli and Matías Fontenla zurl.co/h2IZ1

The Impact of Return Migration on Economic Development
Abstract. Mexican migration to the United States—one of the largest flows in human history—inverted in the late 2000s, and during the next decade more Mexicans returned home than those who migrated north. We exploit this historical reversal to estimate the effects of return migration on economic development in Mexico. We find that return migration leads to higher levels of development through improved income, labor, health, and educational outcomes. Our findings suggest that the benefits of migration extend beyond individuals’ tenure abroad, as accumulated capital, skills, and social norms have the potential to contribute to development back home.

Important point: Handing out special tax breaks (not having to put $1 in the treasury) is equivalent to paying out a direct subsidy (take $1 from the treasury), and should be accounted for as such, even though they are more complicated to understand. Don't reward obfuscation.

New publication alert! My paper “Buying Loyalty at the Track? Formula One Grands Prix and Civil Unrest” has just been published in the International Journal of Sport Finance.
This article provides an empirical investigation of potential noneconomic consequences of hosting a major sporting event. Using two datasets of civil unrest events, I test if hosting a Formula One Grand Prix is associated with changes in social and political unrest days. Using propensity score matching, coarsened exact matching, and GMM estimation, results provide limited evidence that hosting a Formula One Grand Prix is associated with fewer days of unrest, suggesting that hosts may see political benefits from hosting major sporting events. However, there is some heterogeneity depending on the dataset used. This article contributes to the discussion examining political benefits and costs of hosting large sporting events, which may need to be taken into account along with the financial benefits and costs.

You're going to be hearing a lot about the massive economic impact of the NFL Draft. New study from Frank Stephenson finds this isn't the case. Also examines a few other events, including Taylor Swift concerts, finding similarly small effects. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The NFL draft and host-city hotel occupancy

Abstract
Since 2015, the National Football League (NFL) draft has been held in various cities around the United States and has been accompanied by claims of large economic benefits. This paper uses daily hotel occupancy data to examine the effects of hosting the NFL draft. The results indicate the 2015–2018 drafts had negligible effects on room rentals and hotel revenue, while the 2019–2024 drafts (excluding 2020 and 2021) had statistically significant but small effects. The paper also presents estimates for other events held in draft-hosting cities, including NFL and other professional sports games, Formula One races, a Super Bowl, and Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concerts.

We live in an era of “hot takes”, where being first to complain is often valued more than being right. But a multi-billion-dollar redevelopment project that could redefine Drew Park and the Dale Mabry Sports Corridor for the next half-century deserves more than a knee-jerk reaction. Let your elected officials and financial analysts do their due diligence, but demand that it be rigorous, transparent and grounded. Then let’s all sit down and determine whether a deal is truly worthy of all our trust.

Breaking News - Chattanoogan.com
County Attorney Janie Parks Varnell said in a letter that a lack of development around the new Erlanger Park is poised to harm taxpayers. She said under current projections the delay would result in an approximate shortfall of $880,000 per year, or approximately $73,300 per month." A large portion of that amount had been projected to be covered by incremental tax revenue generated by the area around the stadium, which is set to open in a month as the new home of the Chattanooga Lookouts. The letter was sent to master site developer Jim Irwin and Gary Chazen and Andy Stone of Perimeter Properties, owner of the foundry site. Mr. Stone and Mr. Irwin said, “We have participated ... Antonio Minniti, Klaus Prettner, Francesco Venturini, & David Bloom find that European regions with more intense #AI patenting tend to experience a decline in the labour share of income, indicating that AI acts as a capital-biased innovation. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
Description of the figure: AI intensity across European regions (left panel) and the cumulative change in the labour share between 2000 and 2017 (right panel). In regions with higher AI intensity, the labour income share tended to decrease during the overall time span.

The swift rise of artificial intelligence is raising fundamental concerns about the future of work. This column uses data from 238 regions across 21 European countries to examine how AI-related innovation influences the distribution of income between labour and capital, and among different skill classes of labour. Regions with more intense AI patenting tend to experience a decline in the labour share of income, especially in areas with a strong industrial base, indicating that AI acts as a capital-biased innovation. Without appropriate policy intervention, this trend could exacerbate existing inequalities.
