Actor Sam Neill had that idea when he played an Australian astronaut in the film "Event Horizon" (1997) set in 2047. He asked for that design, saying he thought by 2047 Australia would celebrate its Indigenous history. #InvasionDay

Unpaywalled until Monday! A review (of sorts) of Michelle Obama’s visit to Australia in May. For a mere $195-895, it was possible to see her “in conversation”— with Annabel Crabb or Leigh Sales—along with 5,000 other people. I had thoughts. www.australianbookreview.com.au/abr-contribu...

The US is turning 250 – and Trump is making it all about him
Trump is not the first president to lean into an exaggerated patriotism at a time of crisis. But the vanity of his actions signals something perhaps unique.

In May, Michelle Obama visited Australia for four "in conversation" events. Annabel Crabb hosted in Melbourne; Leigh Sales in Sydney. I found the evening underwhelming, but most of the people I spoke to at the Melb Convention Centre loved it. www.australianbookreview.com.au/abr-online/c...

The thing about social media age restrictions is that it treats today’s internet as an inevitability we all just have to deal with. The internet (and the WORLD) wasn’t like this until like four dudes were allowed to own & monetize as much tech real estate as they wanted. Fix THAT problem.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

For all of Australians' pride (smugness) about a generally excellent federal election process, overseen by an independent statutory body... poll numbers on the east coast are released long before people on the west coast have finished voting. That's always struck me as less-than-ideal.

The thing about white supremacy is that it’s a receding horizon—it can never be accomplished and maintained. So what you’ll get is increasing infighting among the elites of this sect as to who’s truly white, who’s the right kind of Christian, who’s a real man, that will exclude more and more people.

You and me, both, Dr. Du Bois. You and me both.
JPG quoting W. E. B. Du Bois: 'I remember once offering to an editor an article which began with a reference to the experience of last century. “Oh,” he said, “leave out the history and come to the present.” I felt like going to him over a thousand miles and taking him by the lapels and saying, “Dear, dear jackass! Don’t you understand that the past is the present; that without what was, nothing is? That, of the infinite dead, the living are but unimportant bits?”'
