"Things are still very chaotic," a current id Software employee who was granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly told Aftermath. "While there has been an attempt to communicate to the studios, it is still entirely in bullshit corporate speak. I still don't believe they have a clear vision for the future. The only concrete thing they have communicated is they want higher profits, and they want it now. Aggressive goals are being set that would have been unrealistic even before the layoffs. ... To say the workers within Xbox have a dim view of the future is putting it mildly. We keep thinking morale can't sink lower but the obvious incompetence of Xbox management somehow keeps driving it down worse."
This mirrors shifts in strategy that have come to dominate the still-new Sharma era, including others outlined Tuesday. Rare is joining Activision, Turn 10 and Playground are fusing, and—most gallingly, considering their history—Obsidian is being folded into Bethesda to work on Fallout instead of its own original series. As with the previous round of layoffs, details betray Microsoft's haphazard approach: A Halo developer got promoted and laid off in the same week. Gears of War: E-Day's story director is out of a job days after celebrating that the game had gone gold. Hellblade developer Ninja Theory, now without a buyer after a brief glimmer of hope, is once again on the chopping block.
All of this betrays a simplistic mindset that does not accurately reflect the reality of game development: People are disposable, studios are interchangeable, and series can be traded like sports teams. Nothing matters more than franchises and their money-printing prowess. Unless, evidently, you are Hideo Kojima, in which case Microsoft suddenly has money to burn.

I do wish he'd included my answers to these two questions, they're really important, especially the last one!

What's the biggest barrier that remains and how can we overcome it?
The largest barrier we face is not unique to the games industry, it's baked into capitalism. The incredible power imbalance between capitalists and workers means they can make decisions that impact us in ways that are incredibly difficult and time consuming to respond to. Rockstar executives can decide to fire 34 union organizers in a moment, and it takes months if not years to fight. Companies can do redundancy after redundancy and there is little the workers can do to stop that from happening in those moments until we build up enough collective power to apply enough pressure against company owners and executives.

There's no single answer as to how we overcome the power imbalance. We try and experiment with many different things to solve and address issues. We build relationships and trust and work together to take action. We improve things bit by bit and slowly, ever so slowly we build our power together. Overcoming capitalism is a generational project and one that may not complete in our lifetime, but it's worth working towards now so those who see it come to fruition will reap the benefits. Unions are an integral part in building up the knowledge, skill, and confidence to change the world on a local to worldwide scale.

Anything you'd like to add? Anything people are NOT talking about enough?
The amount of care work that people in unions do is absolutely astounding. Imagine someone who has just been severely mistreated or laid off and has their world turned upside down. The thing they need most is someone to be there for them, listen to them, and help them figure out what their options are. When mistreatment happens on the scale of an entire industry, it takes an overwhelming amount of care work to respond to each incident. We need to build up our individual and collective caring abilities so that we can get through it instead of being constantly dysregulated and overwhelmed.

A lot of the people experiencing the effects of Gamergate first hand were very aware that it was a fascist movement at its core.
