Last week's terminations at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) total at least 150 grants worth $230M. That is over half of the agency's portfolio. It's the latest assault on healthcare, health equity, and the rule of law. grant-witness.us/posts/2026-0... #AHRQ 🧪

Termination of AHRQ grants is the latest assault on health equity and the rule of law. – Grant Witness
The agency charged with finding ways to make American health care more effective has been gutted. Last week’s terminations are just the latest blow.

Welp, after waiting for nearly a year for my (already allocated) funding, my AHRQ R01 was “not awarded continued funding” (aka terminated). After four years of data collection and $2 million spent, we did not receive our fifth year to analyze the data.

Withdrawal of funding mid-trial is a serious violation of research ethics and implicates all of us who engage in clinical research. Ethical review boards around the world will have to re-evaluate allowing US-funded projects. The balance between harm-benefit is complexly upended.

Figure showing 20 highest and 20 lowest paid specialties. The top 20 mostly surgical or adult medicine, the bottom 20 mostly pediatrics. The figure also shows that the top 20 fill close to 99% of their training slots, whereas the bottom 20 only fill 40-60% of their slots.
