🗣️ At its best, planning is participative, open & inclusive. This requires a democratic framework that empowers everyone to take part in decisions affecting them. 🚧 However, the Planning & Infrastructure Bill threatens local democratic accountability & shuts out communities' voices. shorturl.at/D59PO

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability & quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

How can we transform the UK’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods? In this Capacity CIC podcast episode, our head of policy & comms @maddiejennings.bsky.social, 3ni director Dan Crowe, & community leader Stephen Perez discuss why regeneration must begin with local residents:

An image with a green gradient background on the left and a blurred outdoor background on the right. On the left, in a speech bubble, are the words: “Residents (and) communities in their neighbourhoods know what needs to be done. They know better than the local authority, they certainly know better than central government what problems they're facing and what solutions are going to work for them.” Below this is “Madeleine Jennings Head of policy and communications, Local Trust”. In the top left corner, the words “Local Trust trusting local people” are vertically stacked. In the bottom right corner, there is a logo of a hand holding a heart with the words “The Community Fund” next to it. On the right, Madeleine, wearing a black sleeveless top, smiles at the cameraA quote card with a green gradient background. On the left side of the image, there is a white speech bubble with the following text: "Trust people, that's the most important thing. No matter where they're from, who they are, where they are, what they're doing - we just need to put more trust in people..." Below the quote, it says "Stephen Perez, community leader." In the top left corner, the words "Local Trust trusting local people" are stacked vertically. In the bottom right corner, there is a logo with a hand holding a heart and the text "The Community Fund". A quote card with a green gradient background on the left and a blurred outdoor background on the right. On the left, in a speech bubble, are the words: “We’ve got to be talking about natural meaningful neighbourhoods that the people that live there…relate to and identify with… it’s got to be reflecting those areas where people live…the places that they call home.” Below this is “Dan Crowe Director, 3ni”. In the top left corner, the words “Local Trust trusting local people” are vertically stacked. In the bottom right corner, there is a logo of a hand holding a heart with the words “The Community Fund” next to it. On the right, Dan, wearing a suit and tie, looks directly at the camera.

We’re pleased to share the final Our Bigger Story report, “Learning Practices, Skills and Capabilities for Resident-Led Change in Big Local Areas”, which reveals that the learning of new skills and capabilities brings a ‘learned optimism’ about resident-led community change. [1/2]
Cover of a report titled "Learning practices, skills and capabilities for resident-led change in Big Local Areas" (May 2025). The report is a longitudinal multimedia evaluation of the Big Local programme, conducted by Sheffield Hallam University, Local Trust, and Bayes Business School.

The bottom half features a colourful illustrated infographic with a tree at the centre labeled “Themes,” showing branches like volunteering, leadership, skills, social infrastructure, community pride, and more. Around the tree are icons and words showing outcomes (e.g., “improved wellbeing,” “greater influence,” “better access to services”), context (e.g., “urban,” “rural,” “coastal”), and processes (e.g., “resident-led,” “partnership working,” “action learning”).

The visual emphasizes community-led change and development through collaboration and learning over time.
