Internal records show that the founders had private doubts about the nonprofit structure as early as 2017. That year, after Musk tried to take control, Brockman wrote in a diary entry, "cannot say that we are committed to the non-profit... if three months later we're doing b-corp then it was a lie." Amodei, in one of his early notes, recalled pressing Brockman on his priorities and Brockman replying that he wanted "money and power." Brockman disputes this. His diary entries from this time suggest conflicting instincts.
One reads, "Happy to not become rich on this, so long as no one else is." In another, he asks, "So what do I "really" want?" Among his answers is "Financially what will take me to $1B."

Look at this graph. The share of national income going to the richest 10 percent was lowest (and share to lower 90 percent highest) when union membership was at its highest. As unions have weakened, inequality has widened. This is why we must build back union power.

This does add texture to the situation. I'm trying to read with compassion. I don't know what it's like to receive death threats. However, the cynic in me wonders if this isn't just a story so Republicans can support Trump now, and later said they had been compelled by violence.

According to one source with direct knowledge of the events, North Carolina senator Thom Tillis told people that the FBI warned him about “credible death threats” when he was considering voting against Pete Hegseth’s nomination for defense secretary. Tillis ultimately provided the crucial 50th vote to confirm the former Fox & Friends host to lead the Pentagon. According to the source, Tillis has said that if people want to understand Trump, they should read the 2006 book Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work. (When asked for comment for this story, a spokesperson for Tillis said it was false that the senator had recommended the book in that capacity. The FBI said it had no comment.)
