Four movies sailed in for week 40. A diver was conned into salvaging gold in Below the Surface ('20), three people adrift in the ocean recalled their lives in Limite ('31), small time crooks met a big-eyed Creature from the Haunted Sea ('61), and Stan and Ollie rented a boat in Saps at Sea ('40).

The poster for Below the Surface. The background shows a man in an old style diving suit with the big spherical helmet, standing on the ocean floor before a shipwreck, with large round portholes in front of him. The scene is tinted a mossy green. There's a circular inset at top right with a black and white photo of an older man gesturing to a crowd before him with a woman in evening wear beside him, with the caption "She's my daughter and she's coming home with me!" The title is in the bottom right in simple black serif type.

A modern rerelease poster for Limite, since I couldn't find what I believed to be a contemporary release poster from 1931. This is from the late-2000s restoration. The top half is a black and white photo of a woman with frazzled hair staring over the edge of a lifeboat, her expression blank and defeated. The title is right below, in large light grey letters, following the sloping edge of the boat's gunwale. There's also a director's credit, that it's a film by Mário Peixoto, and that it was made in 1930-1931.

The poster for Creature from the Haunted Sea. It's a pulpy illustration showing a massive scaly hand with huge sharp claws rising out of the ocean, grasping a woman in a negligee in its fist. Wrecked boats little either side of the hand, one on the left fully capsized while another on the right is in the process of sinking, its bow angled high into the air. The title is in the white sky above, in staggered comical black letters with shaky lines around them.

The poster for Saps at Sea. The background is off-white. Pretty simplistic caricatures of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy hang onto the mast of a submerged boat, the mast being all that protrudes above the surface. There is also a goat up there between them. They're both making hand gestures roughly in the form of a naval salute. Ollie wears a captain's hat while Stan wears an enlisted Dixie Cup hat. The title is below in big red silly lettering.

4: Rewatched “The Caine Mutiny.” Humphrey Bogart is a Navy captain who’s relieved of command at sea under controversial circumstances. I like the later adaptations (either the Altman or Friedkin one) that focus on the court-martial case without annoying subplots like in this, but Bogart is iconic

3: “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” Sally Field and Lewis Pullman are cleaners for a local aquarium, they both get attached (not in a weird way) to an octopus, and their lives intersect. This film is proud to be a heart-tugger; I LIKE heart-tuggers but not when they’re so heavy-handed, like this one

2: “Lifeboat,” a 1944 drama about survivors of a U-boat attack who are stranded in a … yep, you got it. A Hitchcock bottle movie would usually be just my thing; this fell a little flat. But my historian brain is fascinated by mainstream movies made during WWII that weren’t afraid to be ABOUT the war

1: “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” where Russell Crowe stars as the captain of a fighting ship in the Napoleonic Wars. I wonder if I subconsciously resisted watching this before now thinking its extra-long, compound title promised an overbloated movie. Big mistake, it’s fantastic

Don't Look Now (1973) Unfortunately this did very little for me. I don't find Donald Sutherland remotely interesting or charismatic. Nothing it had to say about grief seemed very interesting or especially compelling in how it was communicated. Oh well. 1.5/5

Working through the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise this spooky season. Fun times with Part 4: The Dream Master featuring a particularly nasty Freddy kill as he appears as a mermaid inside a waterbed, only to burst through and drown his target with a peak Freddy quip: "How's this for a wet dream?"

I sat down to watch The Simpsons Movie for a previous challenge (Spider-pig = more than two legs) but the plot point of a polluted Lake Springfield means I can use it here! Not perfect, but done well enough that as a long-time fan who hasn't watched the show years, it felt like visiting old friends.

Watched Mayday. Great action, inventive car chase, good pacing. Branagh is charming, though his Russian accent still sucks. Unfortunately, Reynold’s character lacks competence in ways that don’t make sense, leaving him a quip dispenser. Fun, imbalanced buddy road action

Watched Thrash. Woke nonsense pushing climate change, food and medical care for kids. Significantly more grounded than Sharknado, but still ridiculous. The lesson: no loose knit sweaters where you can't fully control them. Djimon Hounsou has gotta be the hardest-working man in Hollywood.

A scene from the film Thrash, where Djimon Hounsou has a look that he has just seen something shocking. He is wearing a zipped sweater and a heavy-duty rain coat.

Mutiny (2026) is a paint-by-numbers Jason Statham retread of Die Hard, only it takes place on a cargo ship in the ocean. It's mediocre at best and even Statham was phoning it in a bit, but hey, there's ocean all around, meaning he and a group of trafficked people can't escape til the bad guys die.
