The idea that AI companies will self-police is risible. There're too many incentives for defection and cheating. Even most minimalist conceptions of government allow for the state to step in to correct market failure; this is a classic example of where that's necessary.

Google did not have to change Google Maps to comply with Trump's order. This is a choice they are making, pretending that they are removing themselves from controversy while actually inserting themselves in the centre. There are any number of procedural hurdles they could invent to slow-walk this.
