New simple but striking analysis from @americanprogress.bsky.social Wealth inequality has exploded since the end of 2024: -In real dollars, the top 0.1% has gained 8,000X as much wealth per household, as most American households.

In many ways it is amazing that the Republican advantage on the deficit has survived as long as it has. Can anyone name a single bill signed by a post-1993 Republican President that did (or was projected to) significantly reduce the deficit? (at least $50B or 0.1% of GDP)

Taxing shell companies would help lower federal debt. It would also crack down on tax evasion, money laundering, and sanction evasion, argues CAP's @chusak.bsky.social for @marketwatch.com: on.mktw.net/4gCKQ07

A new tax on these companies would help Washington shrink the deficit
This month, the U.S. Treasury Department made two ominous announcements: that it will no longer require shell companies to identify who owns them, and that the U.S. federal debt has hit $40 trillion.

A really interesting way to re-frame the federal debt conversation. Instead of measuring debt as a stock to a flow (debt-to-GDP) measure it as a stock to a stock (debt-to-wealth) Wealth is less well-measured than GDP, but would be great to see more comparative research on this metric

My new @americanprogress.bsky.social post is my tax wish for progressives: Take 50% of the time spent thinking about Taxing Corporations and instead think about taxing a different (Larger! More inequitable! Shadowy!) business type: partnerships www.americanprogress.org/article/busi...

Business Income Has Moved Beyond Corporations, and Tax Policy Must Follow
Since the 1980s, partnerships have displaced traditional C corporations as the largest source of business income, transforming business taxation and contributing to rising economic inequality.

absolutely, and it's because we lack statehood. I realize, for obvious reasons, that most people view D.C. statehood in terms of 2 (almost certainly) Democratic senate seats, but the lack of self-governance is a real problem. Imagine if Congress had a de facto line item veto over your state budget.

That congestion pricing is working -- like, really really working! -- is important for the larger effort to restore faith in govt. Take big swings, get big results that people can actually feel. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/27/o...
The triumph of congestion pricing also offers a larger reminder: Government, done right, has immense power to improve people’s lives. Many Americans have grown cynical of government, and they are right to be disappointed about its frequent failure to deliver results in the 21st century. But the answer cannot be allowing the private market and pursuit of profits to dominate American life. Leaders should instead take political risks, as officials in New York did, to create programs that can deliver tangible results.

Taxes aren't primarily a punishment for people we dislike. They are a mechanism to fund the programs that make the country less unfair. The govt lifts more than 30 million people out of poverty each year. We can and should do better than that, and we need tax revenue for that.

The Bush tax cuts and the Trump tax cuts are entirely to blame for our fiscal gap. Entirely? Spending projections are down relative to old projections where we didn't have a fiscal gap, not up. That is, relative to projections where there was no problem, spending is down. So it's all revenue loss.
Line graph showing both revenues and spending falling behind old projections.

First, what happened? I'm looking at the fiscal gap, which measures the average primary (non-interest) deficit reduction needed to keep debt/GDP stable. The Big Beautiful Bill made that 45% worse. And if OB3's temporary provisions are made permanent, it made our fiscal situation 76% worse.
FG before OB3: 1.64%
Including OB3: 2.39%
Also assume temporary OB3 provisions are extended: 2.89%
Also include tariffs: 2.26%
Now assume only 1/3 of tariffs remain after 2029: 2.63%
