My Letterboxd review of Iced -

The writer of this movie wrote himself a pretty graphic sex scene with a grown up Wednesday Addams. It was not the last time she appeared as naked as one could be in the movie.

Every male character in this movie was insufferable and deserved to die.

The hero of the movie was a bully who bested someone at skiing and rubbed the guy's nose in it by also making a play for the girl he liked while being a boorish jackass. This led to some ill-advised night skiing.

The guy who was steady on cocaine seemed like he was a hair's breadth away from a massive coronary regardless of his being stalked by a ski suit-wearing killer.

These are my observations. These are my feelings.

My Letterboxd review of Scream VI -

Largely meh. Good cast, acting is good, story is slapdash, script is exposition to catch you up on the sixth movie as if you hadn't already seen the other five, kills are goryish, kills are boringish. You don't win the prize with three separate facial stabbings - where have ye gone, garage door murder-level inspirado?

My Letterboxd review of Anything for Jackson -

Look, you had me at "bereaved, elderly Satanists". Then you had to go and throw Supernatural's Death (as in Four Horsemen) in the mix. And he's ride or die for his wife? Sold.

The fresh take on the tropes here was good to see. The effects were excellent. A bit of a cluster fuck in the last third, when proceedings hew toward action™️, but still strong overall.

My Letterboxd review of Heretic -

I should have trusted my gut when I saw that this was the same directing team behind Haunt, but I had misplaced faith in A24.

Fake deep and unenjoyable, save for Hugh Grant's performance. I don't mean the character Hugh Grant portrayed, or the script that was delivered. I mean Hugh Grant's performance in spite of those things.

One other improvement over Haunt - the breathy cover over the credits this time was Knockin' On Heaven's Door, which leads itself better to that treatment than Dragula did at the end of Haunt. Still, I get the feeling that the Dylan song was used only because the word Heaven is in the title. Yet another choice made in the shallow end of the pool.

My Letterboxd review of Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker AKA Night Warning - 1/2

From the moment a guy gets Final Destinationed to the last gasp of the wicked, this movie is entertaining and insane.

Susan Tyrrell gives a virtuoso performance as the unbalanced Aunt Cheryl. She's got her whole chest working on huffing and puffing when she's crossed and her cat that ate the canary smirk going whenever she does something diabolical. Between those poles she's trembling, sobbing, not-good-touching, and temper tantruming like a pro.My Letterboxd review of Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker AKA Night Warning - 2/2

In a rarity for an 80s exploitation movie, the rest of the cast is also pretty game. Bo Svenson plays a convincing piece of shit cop (there are almost as many f slurs in this movie as there are fucks in Scarface). Not only is Jimmy McNichol not insufferable as our protagonist, Billy Lynch, a teenager raised in a creepy-ass fashion by his doting aunt, but he comes across as someone you can actually root for. Billy's got some depth and diversity of feeling, and McNichol does a good job investing him with equal parts dependency and agency in turn.

There's some gnarly gore, some unhinged line deliveries by Tyrrell, and an actual positive representation of a gay character; all things you love to see in a subversive flick from the start of the Reagan years. Baby Bill Paxton as a Chet-esque bully teammate of Billy, and pre-Newhart Julia Duffy as Billy's girlfriend, Julie, are welcome additions.

This is a much better than average movie that scratches the weirdness itch while delivering a story that contains actual drama.

My Letterboxd review of Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key -

The title is amazing. Edwige is amazing.

A disastrous, abusive, washed-up writer and his long-suffering wife receive a visit from his all grown up niece. She'll show them both how "liberated" she is and maybe, just maybe, she'll give the wife the support she needs to stand up for herself. Also, there's a string of murders being investigated by an Italian version of the principal from Head of the Class.

Did you ever think, "I like Edgar Allan Poe, and I like Mary Poppins, but I also want both of them sexed up like 1000%?" If so, this is for you.

My Letterboxd review of Anora - 1/2

Anora is a romance, but the romance is with the idea of escape. Is it possible to escape from where you are? Does where you start matter to your chances? Is love transcendent or transactional?

The story is very much in the vein of Good Time and Uncut Gems; everyone is imperfect and motivated in real ways, a better life is sought by securing wealth, and people pinball off of each other, chipping away more of their facades with every hit.

The praise Mikey Madison is getting for her performance is entirely due. She's game in a way that isn't safe but is warm and engaging. Here's hoping she keeps getting roles that showcase her versatility. My Letterboxd review of Anora - 2/2

Some love needs to go to Vache Tovmasyan for bringing the comedy and Karren Karagulian for straight manning, and both for providing just the right amount of menace to the proceedings. Equally important to their antagonist roles is their relatability; they're not in control and they're as trapped as anyone else in the story.

Yuriy Borisov's Igor almost owns the second half of the film. When he's not talking, you're watching him, and when he is talking, you're wanting to know him more.

Writer/director/editor Sean Baker has cited Mike Leigh, John Cassavetes, and Jim Jarmusch, among others, as influences, and that's apparent in the character work on display. I don't know why the hell this is the first of his movies I've watched, but I'll be rectifying that.

My Letterboxd review of Cannibal Apocalypse -

This was almost very good, and the John Saxon parts made that clear. The gore was quality and the makeup was excellent.

Otherwise, the story was predictable and the characters were mostly not rootable (except for Saxon). The police chief was cartoonishly angry southern but the biker gang was maybe Californian?

Still better than a fair share of straight to streaming horror movies that probably have at least five times the budget.

My Letterboxd review of Hansel & Gretel -

I'm not sure what I expected, but the semi-whimsical, though creepy, setup gives way to some real life darkness.

There's not much nuance, and maybe that's part of the reason the bad stuff on display hits harder.

More sad than scary or thrilling, and to pull that off you need competent acting. This cast delivers in spades.

My Letterboxd review of The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism - 1/2

Roger Mont Elise looks like if Goodwin from Lost was on a kidney drug that caused a bit of bloat.

Roger and the annoying priest saved Lilian and her servant, Babette. Fuck Lilian's driver, I guess.

Priest: "He's deaf and dumb."
Captions: He's definitely dumb.

"The language of the deaf and dumb is also the language of thieves." Take that, sign language!

Roger's driver is now driving under duress and the priest's gunpoint. Some might call that kidnapping. I am some.

Every time Roger the amnesiac lawyer smiles, I feel like he's losing more brain cells.

And that's two drivers down.My Letterboxd review of The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism - 2/2

So, Count Regula has been dead for 35 years? Then who the fuck hung the like 100 bodies in this evil forest?

Sweet evil paintings in a cool evil lair of a castle.

That's quite the drug to have made Lilian think she lived in the castle, forget she got kidnapped, and feel like playing piano, and believe Anatol's a good friend to her all in a matter of minutes.

Anatol is the hardest-working man on the continent. He's running that evil castle with all the trap doors, spike traps, and false walls, and he must have been the one hanging folks in the forest, too.

I had no idea that a recently-hanged man could come back invulnerable. Sounds like bullshit.

Pretty neat that the twelve murdered virgins have stayed decomposition-free for 35 years.

Music appropriate to five different genres of movie are on display here.

Resurrected Count Regula has got the worst Fab Four mop top I've ever seen.

There is a lot of telling going on, and very little showing.

Everybody keeps saying there were twelve murdered virgins but I'm seeing five, maybe six.

So, if I stick a pendulum blade in a movie I can say it's based on an Edgar Allan Poe story?

The Count was a master alchemist, mechanical engineer, and diabolist. What he wasn't was a Doctor or a Sadist. Discuss.

My Letterboxd review of The Third Eye -

Franco Nero plays a creepy, spoiled brat whose mommy gave him either too many or too few hugs. Think Norman Bates as played by Ron Burgundy.

Gioia Pascal plays an overlooked servant waiting for her time to shine, and she's willing to kill to get it. She's a proto-Sofia Falcone.

Add in-depth (read: gross) bird taxidermy, some murders of passion, some murders of mania, and a multitude of extreme closeups on eyes and foreheads, and you've got a recipe for a good time.

Fantastic job at using sound, staging, and light to evoke the senses of sterility, dissociation, over-association, and transgressive thrill at different times throughout.
