Christian Traxler @chtraxler.bsky.social · 13/08/2026This 2nd reform retrospectively lowered annual vehicle taxes - that were due after the tax-exempt year - for some type of new vehicles (with sufficiently low CO2 emissions relative to displacement volume) registered after Nov 5. See the first stage plot below. (2/2) bsky.app/profile/chtr... 111
Christian Traxler @chtraxler.bsky.social · 13/08/2026Thx for asking. The setting is really complicated, so let me explain: the 1st reform introduced a temporary tax exemption for all new (and only new, not used) vehicles registered between Nov 5, 2008 and June 30, 2009. But we're mainly interested in a 2nd reform, which was announced in Q1 2009. (1/2) 110

Christian Traxler @chtraxler.bsky.social · 22/07/2026Our daily data reveal sharp spikes in fleet exits at the 1st and 3rd registration anniversaries - typical lease endpoints, when many returned cars appear to be exported. Decomposition analysis suggests that exports (rather than scrappage/retirement) are the main driver of fleet exit. 121
Christian Traxler @chtraxler.bsky.social · 22/07/2026Reduced-form estimates show that lower taxes cut the probability of permanent deregistration by 0.6-1.2pp over a vehicle's first 6 years. 👉 A 10% tax increase would raise the six-year deregistration share by ~2.8% of the baseline rate. 110
