fun fact: The Treaty of Tripoli, 1796, Signed by Prez John Adams, includes: "As the government of the United States of America is *not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion*, as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of [Muslims].." Just saying.

If the bill prevents officers from taking second jobs as security officers from *anyone* he shouldn’t. Many neighborhood associations in SF (when Newsom was mayor) hired them to ramp down crime flare ups. It was effective.

can we PLEASE bring back the word "poser" and stop using "larp" or "cosplay" - being a "poser" or "faking" being into something is lazy and disingenuous whereas cosplayers and actual larpers are passionate about their hobbies and out a lot of time and effort into them

Finally getting around to reading Bill Bryson’s At Home (only 16 years after it was published) and learned that after the British started using chimneys everywhere and people no longer sat around a fire, there were people complaining about missing the good old days of inhaling smoke constantly.
Meanwhile, not everyone was happy with the loss of open hearths.
Many people missed the drifting smoke and were convinced they had been healthier when kept "well kippered in wood smoke," as one observer put it. As late as 1577, a William Harrison insisted that in the days of open fires "our heads did never ake." Smoke in the roof space discouraged nesting birds and was believed to strengthen timbers. Above all, people complained that they weren't nearly as warm as before, which was true.
Because fireplaces were so inefficient, they were constantly enlarged.
Some became so enormous that they were built with benches in them, letting people sit inside the fireplace, almost the only place in the house where they could be really warm.

Trump is not only using the presidency to make decisions that boost his portfolio. His media company is also planning to sell insider access to his market-moving Truth Social posts. I'd say this is a conflict of interest but it should be clear by now that Trump isn't conflicted about any of this.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

Perfect example of the debate of our times. Science's point of view is just another point of view, that of experts, who are just people subject to bias, ideological capture. vs. Science's point of view is about using data to make predictions, and you can observe which predictions come true.
